Stars whose radiance is dimmed by the intertwined branches,
And Arak wood whose fragrance is diffused by the couches.
The youth have adorned them with necklaces of mirth,
Their laughter reveals their precious pearls.
My steed glides in the gloom of night, rivaled
By a whip in my right hand that glitters like a sword.
The blossoms of stars flutter as though
Plucked by the winds and scattered like meteors.
Darkness has let down a veil of gloom,
Rent by the flash of my sword.
What joyous nights of bliss,
When you came to me clad in robes of union!
By God, I forced pliant boughs,
Bearing no fruit but pendent breasts.
The beauties reproach me for having strayed,
To follow a path other than theirs.
By God, I follow no wrong path,
Nor forsake the course of passion.
Who loves the fawn-eyed maid sincerely,
Sees the well-wisher's advice as separation.
Shall I restrain my tears and not shed a cloudburst?
My eyelids are drawing blood though dressed in kohl.
Shall I restrain my longing though it melts my wings?
I have a guardian over the angels of beauty.
The doe of the shrub-covered knoll,
Is like a thirsty oryx, fluttering with desire.
The meadow claims its chill air
Rivals her cool mouth in the goblet.
Her striding steeds, blessed are the undulations
Of her swaying form between their flanks.
If her glances should slay me, I may recoil,
But my resolve defies whatever befalls.
The gazelle's glances are naught but swords,
Her aversion naught but battles.
I will brave the darkness' throat,
Even if doom gapes its mouth at me.
Most often, the valiant meet only death,
When no paths remain but those to mortality.
