ولم أَنْسَ بالنَّاوُوس أَيَّامَنا الأُلَى
بها أَيْنُنا مَحْبُوبُها وحَبَابُهَا
I have not forgotten the good old days
When we were with those we loved
وفِتْيةَ ضَرْبٍ مِن زِناتَةَ مُمْطِرٍ
بوَيْلِ المَنايا طَعْنُها وضِرابُها
And youths wielding spears like lightning
Their stabbing and thrusting dealt death
وَقَفْنا على جَمْرٍ مِن المَوْتِ وَقْفةً
صليّ لَظاهُ دَأْبُ قَوْمِي ودابُهَا
We stood on embers of death
Incessantly praying, the way of my people
إِذا الشَّمْسُ رامَتْ فيه أَكْلَ لُحُومِنا
جَرى جَشَعاً فَوْقَ الجِيادِ لُعابُهَا
When the sun set on it, eager
To devour our flesh, the horses salivated
