What are these bewitching eyes
but arrows held in quivers?
And a sweet-voiced singer sang beautifully,
so I marveled at singer and young gazelle alike.
No sooner did his vocal movements trill
than the motionless themselves began to dance.
O you who lodged your love within my heart—
beware my tears, for they are treacherous.
You have settled in a throbbing heart,
O dweller in what never rests.
Do you think that one upon whom you imposed
war with the reproachers can make peace?
If my heart should fear while loving—
you, then the authority of love is frail.
And if it seeks refuge, then one under—
your protection, O Radiance of the Faith, is safe.
