How could you say my eyes have no tears
When my cheeks bear traces of my blood
Had you witnessed his indifference and my submission
My case would not have been denied
Oh my people, how could you deny my murder
When his rejection lasted but moments of admission
If you asked my eyes and cheeks for an excuse
In them you’d find ample justification
If you asked who was wittier of the eloquent
My burning embers would name that kindler
I see my nights with Laila as naught but days
My nights without her, nights minus all light
The flow between his cheeks augments
And in the dark, the moons shine bright
Ask me not about passion, for in my lids it’s water
And in my soul, it’s inner fire alight
The chaste think my temples turned gray
Laughing off any taunt or humiliation
I haven't grown old, just the fire in my heart
Made the sparks from smoke rise high
