عصف الغصن الرطيب

وتلافانا الحبيب

The moist branch rustled,

and our beloved tryst.

اضمر الدهر لنا

الصلح فلم يبق غضوب

Time harbored peace for us,

no longer wrathful.

زار والعرف له من

نفس الصبح هبوب

The meadow was visited,

the morning breeze blows through it.

والدجا برد على

عطفيه بالنجم قشيب

The Pleiades brought coolness

to its shoulder, with its elderly star.

من بدور الأرض في

غصن يمشيه كثيب

The earth turns

in a branch walking proudly.

من ظباء الانس ان شئ

ت وان شئت ربيب

Of the human race’s gazelles, if you wish

take me, and if you wish, leave me.

يظهر البث واولى

منه بالبث الكئيب

Sorrow appears, though

sadder than it is despair.

كل لفظ منه للسم

ع فصيح وأديب

Every word of it, the ear hears - eloquent and literary.

Each limb takes the place

كل عضومنه في الحس

ن عن الوجه ينوب

of the face in beauty.

What limb do glances roam,

أي عضو تسرح الالحاظ

فيه وتؤوب

only to return?

So fear God and lower your vision,

فاتق اللّه وغض ال

طرف عنه لا يذوب

lest it melt away.

My heart - when there is no

انا والقلب إذا لا

ح سليب ولسيب

fault or cause for blame,

my door is paradise, and through it comes

بابي جنة وصل

منه ما فيها لغوب

all that is in it, nothing forbidden.

All night he calls me to it,

بات يدعوني بها طو

راً وطوراً يستجيب

time and again responding.

The purpose has moved, and from our intimacy

والمنى نقل ومن ند

ماننا كأس وكوب

a cup overflows.

O lovers, exalted by passion I am nourishment -

أيها العشاق محزو

ن الهوى مني طروب

at what time are hearts not torn open?

He but frolics with me

أي وقت ليس تنشق

قلوب وجيوب

in the arena of love, playing.

Whenever joy comes to me,

انما يمرح بي في

حلبة العشق لعوب

whenever sorrow weeps,

and whoever estranges in love,

لي إذا بد سرور

وإذا ند نحيب

has surely forgotten his beloved companion.

No fault to one whose secret is connection,

والذي يهجر في الحب

بّللاحبه نسيب

though the watcher be provoked.

The flexibility of the bow is for the archer,

ما على من سره الوص

ل إذا غبظ الرقيب

and the scars for others.

My way in love is unique to me,

رنة القوس لراميها

وللغير الندوب

extraordinary.

My regrets are my tears,

أنا والحاصل طرزي

في الهوى مثلي غريب

and my heart alternates.

I have no money, but

حسراتي هي دمعي

ولها قلبي قليب

my words are precious gold.

I am of the human race, but

ليس لي مال ولكن

ذهب قولي صبيب

I melt for the gazelles.

Each day I have success

من بني جنسي ولكن

ي مع الغزلان ذيب

with youthful indulgences,

and when I get the chance

كل يوم لي صلاح

بخلاعات مشوب

I harvest and repent.

My effort in love was right,

ومتى امكنت الفر

صة اجني وأتوب

so the erroneous one sang.

This is my state, and the

في الهوى صح اجتهادي

فغنا المخطي المصيب

conditions of love are complex.

My hope in loyal friends

هذه حالي واحوا

ل بني العشق ضروب

I hope will not fail.

O loyal friends, my love for you

ورجائي في بني الصد

يق ارجو لا يخيب

is an amazing affair.

Each day it is an amazing thing

يا بني الصديق لي في

حبكم شأن عجيب

penetrating my flesh.

Love of you, family of Abu Baker,

كل يوم منه في لحم

ي شأن عجيب

by it sins are erased.

Love of you is my faith - whoever

حبكم آل أبي بك

ر به تمحى الذنوب

hates you, terror awaits.

God's wrath on him,

حبكم ديني ومن يب

غضكم طاغ مريب

for he is a liar.

Yours are ascendance, control

غضب اللّه عليه

فهو بالحق كذوب

and an awe-inspiring state.

Remembering you among the kings

لكم الرفعة والسطو

ة والحال المهيب

of earth is amulet and fragrance.

Every age, the Holy Presence has

ذكركم عند ملوك

الأرض تعويذ وطيب

a prominent one from you.

ابن من كان به الغو

ث مع الغيث بصوب

and whisperings covered.

The blessings to the professor continue

شاهد الحضرة واخت

ص وناجته الغيوب

and pleasure is near.

Nightingale of truth, tongue

واستمر الفيض للا

ستاذ والفخ القريب

of rain - pouring clouds.

Intercession of rain dissipates

بلبل الحق لسان ال

غيث هطال سكوب

droughts the age cannot exhaust.

Dispeller of afflictions, though

شفع الغبث بكف

ما لها الدهر نضوب

from the heart worries have departed.

A smiling face - is there

قامع الكرب وقد نا

لت من القلب الكروب

in the Pole Star bitterness?

My leader is for truth

ضاحك الوجه وهل في

طلعة القطب قطوب

and people a beloved.

The sun loving him rises

بابي من هو للحق

وللخلق حبيب

and sets.

What heart has settled in me?

حبه الشمس لها في

شروق وغروب

All my limbs are hearts.

O professor of loftiest character, guarded by the loyal one.

أي قلب حل منى

كل اعضائي قلوب

My chest is tight, and my aid

in my solitude finds fault.

أيها الاستاذ والا

حساب يحميها النسيب

Old age's swords,

and fortunes battles.

ضاق صدري ومعيني

من اخلائي معيب

Patience's wounds,

and fate's blows.

ومن الشيب حراب

ومن الحظ حروب

An isolation - like the isolation

of a thread the weaver deserted.

ومن الصبر مصاب

ومن الدهر مصيب

I would sacrifice myself calling you -

is there from you a respondent?

واغتراب كاغتراب ال

عقد جافاه التريب

Illness of the state has afflicted me -

is there from you a healer?

انا افديك انادي

ك فهل منك مجيب

People know the opening

of the door is from you.

برحت بي علة الحا

ل فهل منك طبيب

I am God's prey - for it

from you a share.

علم الناس بان الفتح

للباب منيب

How does the opening come from your door,

and the breeze be near?

انا فخ اللّه والنس

خ له منك نصيب

So turn to me and favor me,

for you the ample reward.

كيف يغدو الفتح عن با

بك والنفح قريب

And walk in the gardens -

in them I am a songbird.

فالتفت لي واصطنعني

فلك الباع الرحيب

For you are the verses of Ibn Hani,

and for them from you fertility.

وتنزه في رباض

انا فيها عندليب

For you is what Mount Tiya

did not bestow on a beloved before you.

لك من شعري ابن هاني

وله منك الخصيب

How excellent unconquered

territories with untouched buds

لك ما لم يهدها من

طيء قبلي حبيب

from which the glance in what

extinguishes the flame dives.

حبذا من عزبيا

ت الحلى بكر عروب

You've arranged beauty as feathered

arrows in a quiver are arranged.

خاض منها الطرف في ما

ء به يطفى اللهيب

In every verse an intimate friend

and sweetheart for the ear.

نسقت حسنا كما تنس

ق في الرمح الكعوب

The poets of the age have with my poetry

by magic been captivated.

كل بيت فيه للسم

ع خليل وخلوب

Do not say my poetry is long -

the longer it is, the more beautiful.

شعراء العصر من شعري

بالسحر اصبوا

O loyal friends - praise of you is fragrant,

and the connection pleasant.

لا تقل طالت فشعري

كلما طال بطيب

How can your club not thrive,

as does your fertile valley?

يا بني الصديق طاب ال

مدح فيكم والنسيب

You do not cease being suns -

you have no setting ever.

كيف لا يمتاز نادي

كم وواديكم خصيب

So favor, remain, enjoy -

and favor, delight, and be generous

لا برحتم يا شموساً

ما لكم قط مغيب

whenever the east wind blows

or the south winds blow.

فانعموا وابقوا ولذّوا

وانعموا واهنوا وطيبوا

كلما هبت صبا او

كلما هبّت جنوب
