1. لم يبق وجدي لحسن الصبر وجدانا

    ولا لقلب سلاه الدمع سلوانا

    My passion remains undiminished by patience,

    Nor is my heart consoled by tears.

  2. اصبحت أغزر نوحا من مطوقة الوادي

    واكثر اشواقا واشجانا

    I have become more woeful than a valley stream,

    And more longing and melancholy.

  3. خلية البال ان ناحت فعن طرب

    لا كالذي راح بالبلبال ملآنا

    My mind may grieve out of joy,

    Not like one filled with nightingales.

  4. تبيت تحضن من تهوى ويحضنها

    وبت شوقا لمن اهواه سهرانا

    I spend the night embracing whom I love,

    While she embraces me, awake in yearning.

  5. سقيا لا يامنا اللاتي مضت بمسرات

    وعوضت عنها اليوم احزانا

    A toast to the past joys now replaced

    By today's sorrows!

  6. سقياً لها من دموعي دائما فلقد

    بقصر الغيث في سقياه احيانا

    A toast to them always with my tears,

    As rain was scarce to quench their thirst.

  7. حيث النوائب لا تخشى غوائلها

    حيث الحبيب متى ما رضته لانا

    Where calamities are unafraid of their havoc,

    Where my love, whenever pleased, is gentle.

  8. حيث المحاسن روض والمنى زهر

    تجنيه كف الاماني منه ريانا

    Where the meadow is a garden and desire a flower

    Whose fruit the hand of hopes picks ripe.

  9. حيث اقتطاف ثمار كلها قبل

    لما هصرنا القدود الهيف اغصانا

    Where all fruits are plucked

    Before branches sag with ripeness.

  10. وجلنار الخدود الحمر حيث بدا

    هل كان غير نود البيض رمانا

    Where rosy cheeks and red lips appear—

    Are they anything but white pearls and red pomegranates?

  11. للّه صب له قلب بهم ابدا

    متيم لا يزال الدهر ولهانا

    May God spill in him a heart forever

    Infatuated, submissive forevermore.

  12. شوقا لورد لمى تلك المباسم ما

    ينفك مهما سقاه الدمع ظمآنا

    Longing for the rosy cheek of that smiling face

    Which thirsty tears cannot sate.

  13. اضحى يلذّ له ذكر العذيب بها

    وان تثنى قوام يذكر البانا

    The memory of her torment becomes pleasant to him

    Even when her slim figure is bent with age.

  14. فخلني يا خلي البال في شغل

    ولا تلم في الهوى يا صاح سكرانا

    So leave me, O cupbearer, to my occupation

    And do not blame me in love, O drunkard!

  15. ولا تكلف فؤادي كتم نار هوى

    لبنى فليس فؤاد الصب صوانا

    Do not burden my heart to conceal the fire of passion

    For the heart of a lover has no concealing.

  16. اخفيته مثل ما اخفى الضنى جسدي

    وعبرتي صيرت اخفاه اعلانا

    I hid it like I hide my emaciated body

    And made my tears a hidden expression.

  17. يزيد اخفاؤه اظهاره أبداً

    كفضل اقضى قضاة العصر مولانا

    Hiding it increasingly reveals it

    Like the superior virtue of our time's supreme judge.

  18. الحاكم الحاسم الشرعي ذي الهمم اللا

    تي استقاه اليها الدهر اذعانا

    The arbiter, the lawful decisive one,

    To whom time yielded in obedience.

  19. العالم العامل الحبر المدقق وال

    هجر المدفق ايضاحا وتبيانا

    The scholar, the practicing sage, the verified expert

    Whose overflow poured clarity and explanation.

  20. صدر الشريعة كنز الجود قلدنا

    النعمي بفضل عن النعمان اغنانا

    The leader of Islamic law, treasure of generosity—

    We were given favors beyond favors.

  21. نهاية القوم لم تلحق بدايته

    ولو مشى ورجال القوم فرسانا

    His excellence did not overtake his beginning,

    Even if he walked and his men rode horses.

  22. تدفقت راحتاه مثل فكرته

    فابهر الناس معروفا وعرفانا

    His rest poured like his thoughts

    Dazzling people with his favors and grace.

  23. واحسن الرأي اذ عمت مواهبه

    فلم يزل موليا حسنى واحسانا

    He judged well when his virtues prevailed,

    Never ceasing to be a benevolent patron.

  24. بحر من الجود قد ما جت مكارمه

    فيه فوافرحتا لو بت غرقانا

    An ocean of generosity—how abundant are his virtues!

    It would drown us if its springs burst forth.

  25. لي البشارة در النظم ينظمني

    في سلك خدامه هل كنت مرجانا

    I have good news: his poems will include me

    Among the servants of his court—was I ever a coral bead?

  26. لي الهناء باني في مدائحه

    طلت النجوم مع التقصير ايقانا

    I will delight in praising him

    Though the stars twinkle while I fall short.

  27. هذا الذي عز ان تحصى مناقبه

    وفي المدى كل شيء عنده هانا

    He whose virtues cannot be counted,

    For whom everything in the world is trivial.

  28. هذا الذي جل في الفيحاء مقدمه

    الشريف كالغيث احياها واحيانا

    He whose noble lineage is highest in distinction,

    Who revived the land like rain, at times.

  29. هذا الذي رحم اللّه العباد به

    وهكذا لن يزال اللّه رحمانا

    He who had mercy on people through God,

    And thus will God always be Merciful.

  30. هذا الذي مدحه قد زاد مادحه

    فخرا فها حسن قد صار حسانا

    He whose praise made his praiser

    Prouder—so Al-Hasan is now Al-Husayn.

  31. يا من جعلنا ثناه ذخرنا ابدا

    فعطر الارج الشحري ارجانا

    O you who made our praise of you our treasure forever,

    So the sweet basil smells more sweet.

  32. ومن اذا تليت اوصافه تركت

    عطف اللبيب بغير الخير نشوانا

    And when his qualities are recited, who would

    Turn their affection elsewhere out of goodness?

  33. اليكها بنت فكر طالما خطبت

    وما سمحت بها صوتا واحصانا

    To you this poem, whose hand I have long sought

    But my voice was not permitted to be bold.

  34. بلقيس نظم وعرش الدر مسكنها

    فهل ارى كفؤها الا سليمانا

    Bilqis's verse and throne of pearl—

    Who but Solomon could match her?

  35. لا استحثك في حق عليك لها

    انا الذي نام ان تيهت يقظانا

    I do not rush you for her sake,

    It is I who slumber while you remain awake.

  36. واسلم ودم في سرور دائم وعلا

    وابلغ من العزا وطاراً واوطانا

    I submit my love in lasting joy and elevation,

    Flying from sorrow, homeland, and homes.

  37. ما رجعت شجوها الورقا معربة

    عنه وما رددت في الدوح الحانا

    Her poetry did not turn the leaves as eloquent

    About him, nor echo odes.
