Are you not, O angels, a group

    That makes these poems eternal?

For if you lack some people from your gifts

Then it is right for the poets that you increase them

We were created for your sake, not for ourselves

We are but praise and glorification

O owner of glory, glory is a thirsty she-camel

That goes astray unless tied down by poetry

Take me, however you wish, with the confused wanderings

That the deaf listens to though useless

And excuse the one who still has

In the watering of sustenance, binding and knotting

He does not attain livelihood from what you grant

Until stretched thin by the workers' oppression

Poetry has only an alert idea

    That you invigorate and support

Eulogies are but for kings, and does

The old necklace reveal anything but pearls and fine gems?
