1. قالوا صحا وأدال الغيَّ بالرَّشَدِ

    من لي بذاك الصِّبا في ذلك الفَنَدِ

    They said wake up and replace ignorance with wisdom

    Who can restore my youth in that paradise?

  2. لئن صحوتُ فعن كَرهٍ وقد علموا

    بأيّ علقٍ من الدنيا فتحتُ يدي

    If I wake up reluctantly, they already know

    With what longing for the world I open my hands

  3. لم يقصد الدهرُ إصلاحي ولي مثلٌ

    في الغصن تذهبُ عنه صورة الغيد

    Fate did not intend to reform me, and I have a likeness

    That disappears from the branch like the leaves of a vine

  4. طوى الزمانُ لييلاتٍ نعمتُ بها

    رنا بعينِ الرضى منها ولم يكد

    Time has folded nights I enjoyed

    I glanced at them with pleased eyes and they did not last

  5. وقاتل الله أدوار السنين فكم

    مزجن بالسمّ ما احلولى من الشهدِ

    May God destroy the cycles of years, how many

    Were mixed with poison instead of sweet honey

  6. لم يرسمِ الشيبُ في فوديَّ خطَّته

    إِلاَّ ترحَّلَت اللذاتُ من خلدي

    Old age did not outline its inscription on my cheeks

    Except pleasures moved from my eternity

  7. ضيفُ الوقارِ أفدنا منه تكرمةً

    بما تثقف من أمتٍ ومن أود

    The guest of dignity did us a favor

    With the education of a nation and of an epoch

  8. وأسمرُ الخطّ لا تبدو فَضيلتُه

    بغير أزرق كالنبراس متَّقد

    Brown of line, its merit does not appear

    Without light blue like a burning torch

  9. للدهرِ عندي بناتٌ من تجاربه

    أولى واجدرُ بي من بيضها الخرد

    Life has daughters from its experiences for me

    More deserving and suitable for me than its beads

  10. الحرُّ يرزأ إلاَّ فضل شيمته

    وإن تقلَّب بين البؤسِ والنكد

    The free looks down on all except the merit of his morals

    Even if he shifts between misery and distress

  11. وما الغنى في يدٍ مملوءةٍ عَرضاً

    لكنه في وفور العزم والجلد

    Wealth is not in a hand full of pride

    But in the abundance of determination and patience

  12. أو في رجاءِ ابنِ عبادٍ وقد رغبت

    أيدي الملوك عن الإفضال والصَّفَد

    Or in hoping for the son of Ibn Abbad, hands of kings

    Abandoned grants and chains

  13. استوثق الناس مما في أكفهمُ

    وربما نفثوا بخلاً على العُقَد

    People took precautions against what’s in their palms

    And sometimes they breath stinginess over knots

  14. ولا يرى العَقد إلا في أذمّتِهِ

    وما حوته يداه غيرُ منعقد

    The knot sees nothing but what's in its pouch

    And what his hands contain, nothing is knotted

  15. بقيةُ الفضلِ في دنيا قد ارتضعت

    ورحمة الله في سلطانه النكد

    The rest of kindness in a world that was suckled

    And God's mercy in his sullen authority

  16. مستجمعُ الفكرِ لا ينحو معاندُهُ

    على بوائدَ من آرائه بدَدِ

    He who gathers thoughts does not incline his obstinacy

    Towards cushions of opinions that scattered

  17. إذا استخفت حلومُ القومِ وقَّرها

    يقظانُ يَسعى إليهم سَعيَ متّئد

    When the people's dreams diminished and restricted them

    The vigilant strive towards them slowly

  18. يكفي المؤيدَ في الأعداء أنَّ له

    عيناً من الله لا تَغفى من الرصد

    It is enough for the supported among enemies that he has

    An eye from God that does not sleep from observing

  19. تلقى به صِلَّ أصلالٍ وآيتُهُ

    أن تستبين عليه قشرةُ الزرد

    It faces continuous good deeds, and its sign

    Is that the coating of pearl is evident through it

  20. وما تمرُّ بأدهى من ليوثِ وغىً

    بتبعن منه أباناً وافر اللبد

    Nothing passes mightier than the lions of war

    Cubs follow them with abundant fur

  21. يجرُّ من شجر الخطّي غابته

    وذاك ما لم تَسَعهُ عزمةُ الأسد

    It pulls the cover of valor from the tree of glory

    As it did not fit the determination of the lion

  22. جاريتمُ الدهرَ في مضمار حَلبتها

    جرياً سواءً إلى أقصى من الأمد

    You raced time in the hippodrome of its milking

    Evenly to the furthest extent of time

  23. لكن تحيتها قدماً وقد شهدت

    يا دار ميَّةَ بالعلياء فالسند

    But I bid farewell to it by foot, and it witnessed

    O land of Meyya for the sublime, thus the pillar

  24. لخمُ ابن يعربَ أولى أن يضاف إلى

    سناء معتضد فيكم ومعتمد

    The tribe of Lakhmi son of Ya'rub is more deserving to attribute

    The glory of Al-Mu'tasim amongst you all to depend and lean on

  25. أنت الجميع وأنت الفرد قد علموا

    سريرة لم تكن في واحد العدد

    You are all and you are the individual, they knew

    A secret that was not in the one of number

  26. يا أشبه الناسِ آداباً بما لك من

    جمال وجهٍ تحدثني وفضل يد

    O most refined people in manners, because of what you have

    Of beauty of face that speaks to me and merit of hand

  27. من أين لي قَدَمٌ في الفضلِ سابقةٌ

    لو أنَّ طبعيَ في واديك لم يرد

    Where do I have a foot preceding in merit

    If my nature in your valley did not want

  28. هذا الأتيُّ لذاك المزنِ منتسبٌ

    عاري الأديمِ من الأقذاء والزبد

    This weak one related to the noble

    Bare of skin from roughness and foam

  29. ارسلتها في سماء المجد طائرةً

    عن غير جهدٍ وفيها متعةُ الأبد

    I sent it in the sky of glory flying

    Without effort, and in it is the pleasure of eternity

  30. تُصحي النهي أبداً من حيث تسكرها

    وتسمع اللحظَ صوت البلبل الغرد

    It keeps the melody awake forever from where it intoxicates it

    And hears the voice of the singing nightingale

  31. لو أن لقمان يُعطَى عمرها بكَ لم

    يُخنِ عليها الذي أخنى على لبد

    If Luqman was given her age for you, he would not

    Betray her like the one who betrayed Lubad

  32. طبعتها ولك التبرُ الذي طُبِعَت

    منه فأسلَمتها في كفٍّ منتقد

    Her nature and yours is the pure gold she was minted from

    So she surrendered it in a refined palm
