Forsake the love of the first one whose love ensnared you;
love belongs only to the last beloved.
What has passed—its sweetness cannot be recovered.
Is an absent pleasure like one that is present?
Gray age, now faithful to its station,
is more faithful to me than treacherous youth.
Your world is your today, not yesterday—so take heed:
what is past and lost is not like what remains.
