أَتَرى النَجم حارَ في الأُفق أَم

أَسبَل لَيلي عَلى نَهاري ذيلا

Do you think the star is bewildered upon the horizon, or

has my night let fall its trailing hem over my day?

أَم كَما عادَ وَصله لي هَجراً

عادَ أَيضاً بِهِ نَهاري لَيلا

Or, just as union with him turned to estrangement for me,

has my day, because of him, likewise turned to night?
