أمسى يسائل عن حالي يخبرها

وكيف أمسيت في أهلي وفي بلدي

He came at evening asking after my condition, to report it to her,

And how I was faring that evening among my family, in my homeland.

فقلت حالي بحالٍ من رثائتها

وعلة الحال تنسي علة الجسدِ

So I said: My condition, taken in itself, is one of its marvels;

The affliction of one’s circumstances makes one forget the affliction of the body.
