وجاهل قال لي لا بد من فرجٍ

فقلت للغيظ لم لا بد من فرج

An ignorant man said to me, "You must have relief!"

I said in vexation, "Why must there be relief?"

فقال من بعد حين قلت يا عجباً

من يضمن العمر لي يا بارد الحجج

Then after a while he said, "How strange it is

That you who argue coolly guarantee me life!"

لو كان ما قلتَ حقاً لم أكن رجلاً

مقسمُ العمر في الروحات والدلج

Had what you said been true, I'd not have been a man

Who apportions life in breaths of mist and fog,

أسعى لأدرك حظاً لو حظيت به

ما كنت أول محظوظٍ من الهمج

Seeking to gain a fortune if I'm lucky,

Not the first of the wretched to be lucky.

ذنبي إلى الدهر أني أبطحي أبٍ

ولست أعزى إلى قم ولا كرج

My fault with fate is that I am pure Arab

With no ties to Qum or Karaj to solace me.
