1. Whoever the beloved—or his messenger—visits,

    after that long separation, has his wish fulfilled.

  2. By God, how sweet the messenger is when he says:

    “The beloved has drawn near; his arrival is at hand.”

  3. Welcome to him! He brought me news of one returning—

    one whose departure drove away my patience in love.

  4. Alas for a lover who has beheld his death,

    whose hope is to die of love.

  5. Fire in his heart—its blaze;

    and water from his eyes—its torrent.

  6. He thought love a light thing; but when he plunged into

    its seas, his path grew arduous.

  7. Nor was all the heartache he endured enough:

    his reproacher only added to his pain.

  8. O you who blame me, knowing nothing of passion,

    leave me—I have no means to rid myself of it.

  9. Love is a beguiling affair, and its gate

    is hard to leave and easy to enter.
