1. إلى الربيع أرى الأهواء تلويني

    لما بدا زهره في حُسن تلوين

    To spring I see the winds adorning me

    When its flowers appeared beautifully adorned

  2. وماس في ذهبيّ الزّهر ذا صلف

    بين الرياض غُصينين اللّباسين

    And jewels in its golden flowers insolently

    Between gardens, two garment-clad branches

  3. كأنه وهو بالكتّان مختلط

    يهود بين نصارى في شعانين

    As if it, mingled with linen,

    Is a Jew among Christians at Epiphany

  4. وعطّر الأرض نشر الفول حين سرت

    نسيمه سحراً منه لتُحييني

    And the earth perfumed, beans had bloomed

    Its morning breeze to revive me

  5. كأن زهرته أمّ الخلول إذا

    فلقتها فوق نعناع بصحنون

    Its flowers like chaste girls unveiled

    Above mint in a dish

  6. وكاد يشبه تاج القمح بامية

    لولا شعور كأعراف البراذين

    The wheat crown almost resembles a turban

    If not for hair like alfalfa leaves

  7. وأشبهت زهرة الكركيش نرجسة

    أو ما تقرطم من زهرات نسرين

    And the nasturtium flower resembles a narcissus

    Or any small flowers of myrtle

  8. وانظر إلى زهر البرسيم كيف حكى

    أبيض التوت في أطراف مرسين

    Look at the clover flower how it told

    Of white mulberry on edges of fences

  9. كأنه اُكَرٌ من لؤلؤ نظمت

    على زمرد أغصان ملاييهن

    As if it necklaces of pearls arranged

    On emeralds of bending sprigs

  10. وحبّذا قصب الخشخاش حاملة

    بديع زهر تبدّى في تلاوين

    And the sugar cane bearing wondrous flowers

    Appearing in colors

  11. تحكي منافح زجاج يضوع بها

    مصبغات حِقاق أو قنانين

    Describing glass bubbles frothing on it

    Dyes of crushed berries or jugs

  12. والأرض حين زهت وازّينت طفقت

    بكل زوج بهيج الحسن تُغريني

    And when the adorned, bejeweled earth began

    To lure me with every delightful couple

  13. وانظر إلى الماء وسط البحر كيف غدا

    يسعى بلا قدم سبحاً على الطين

    And look at the sea water amid the sea how it became

    Flowing without feet swimming on the mud

  14. مُسلسلاً قد جرى يا صاح مُنطلقاً

    فاعجب لمَن جمع الضدين في حين

    Consecutive, flowing freely, oh friend!

    Marvel at the one who united opposites in an instant

  15. ترى الغصون عليه ذاك مُنحنياً

    وذاك من جنّة ناداه حنّيني

    You see the branches above it bending

    And that calling it from the gardens of bliss

  16. توحّل الناس في خدّيه حين بدا

    نبات عارضه بالحُسن يسبيني

    People wade into its cheeks when there appeared

    Vegetation adorning its banks captivating me

  17. وقد بكى فجرت كالسيل أعينه

    إذ حشّش الخدّ من نبت الرياحين

    And it wept pouring from its eyes like a torrent

    When the banks grew vegetation of basil

  18. لأنه صائر شوكاً يقول لمن

    يجني أزاهره بين الافانين

    Because it becomes thorns, saying to one

    Who plucks its flowers between interruptions

  19. يا جاني الزهر إن لاحت ملاحته

    لا تتركني لشوك فيّ واجنيني

    Oh flower picker, if you see them bloom

    Do not leave me to thorns in me, pick me

  20. طارت عليه أوازير العراق وقد

    تصفصفت شبه مشكال البنانين

    Iraqi wild geese flew over it

    Lining up like baby goats

  21. تقول هذي لهذا وهي طائرة

    قاق وصلنا لهذا البحر قاقين

    This one’s for this one, and it flies

    Quack we reached this sea, quack quack

  22. وكم قناة حداها الأرض لو نطقت

    قالت لها يا قناة الماء قنيني

    And how many channels the earth demarcated, if they spoke

    They would say: oh channel, contain me

  23. إذا تكاسل مَن يُقبي قناطرها

    نادته يا وَد خرا بالحبل قبيني

    When one who roofs its aqueducts is lazy

    It calls him: hey boy, wake and rope me

  24. رح لأذبحنك بح قلت لها

    الماء ما فيه شيء ووّا فنحّيني

    I will slaughter you, baa! I said:

    The water has nothing, go and move me!
