باسم الحبيب تفاءلت المُنى فرجاً

قلبي بأن سوف يلقى في الهوى فرجا

In the name of the Beloved I hoped for relief

My heart that it would find relief in love

واستدرجتني أمان ثَمّ كاذبة

تغادر الحيّ يحكي ميّتاً درجا

And she lured me with false security

Then left the living one telling of a dead one's tale

وكلما خلت بَرد الوصل يُسعدني

أثار حرّ النوى في مُهجتي وهَجا

And whenever the cold of separation would depart bringing me joy

The heat of passion stirred up turmoil in my innermost being

وكنت أحسب خوض الحب يسهل بي

حتى ولجت بطامي بحره لُججا

And I thought plunging into love would be easy for me

Until I delved deep into its immense sea

رأيت أسهل ما في ذاك أصعب ما

قد ضيّع الناس في تحصيله المهجا

I saw the easiest in it was the most difficult

Which people squandered their lives trying to attain

فهل سبيل إلى السلوان إن سلكت

لا يختشي الصبّ إن يلق بها عوجا

Is there really a way to tranquility if I tread

The ardent lover does not fear the crooked path

وذا لَعَمري ما لا يُرتجى أبداً

كم خاب في ذا العنا للعاشقين رجا

By my life, this can never be hoped for

How many hopes of lovers in this regard were dashed

لكنّ في عزمات الصبر مُتّسعاً

لقلب صبّ تمادى ضَيّقاً حَرجا

But with resolute patience I can endure

A burning heart persisted though constricted

فاصبر ولا تيأسَن يا قلب من فرج

عسى تعود بما ترجوه مُبتَهجا

So be patient and do not despair my heart of relief

Perhaps you may yet return happy with what you wish

ويسمح الدهر أن يُبدي بغيهبه

من بعد يأس لأوقات الهنا سُرُجا

And time may show in its unseen realm

After despair, luckier days with lamps lit

فالعُسر يقبه يُسرٌ وعلّك من

بعد التنائي بباب القُرب أن تَلجا

Hardship is followed by ease and perhaps after

Separation, by the door of nearness you will find succor

وأن تهب رياح الوصل عاطرة

فتنشق الروح من رُبا اللِّقا أرجا

And the winds of union will blow fragrant

So your soul inhales from the scent of reunion relief
