إذا جعت كُل تشبع

وهذا الكلام

If you are hungry, eat your fill

This advice is tried and true, so listen

مُجرّب صحيح فاسمع

وخَلّ الملام

And cease your blame

Aim for tomorrow, be early

وصوب الغدا بادر

إذا جا على باكر

If it comes at dawn

It will gladden your heart

فذا يشرح الخاطر

ويُبدي السرور

And reveal joy

And if you spend the night in greenery

وإن بتّ في خُضره

وأصبحت في خَضره

And wake in greenery

You walk in the early morning

تمشيت على بُكره

بشطّ البحور

By the seashore

I saw, O my assumption, its creatures

رأيت يا ظنين بدوك

على دا يدور

Spinning around it

Wondrously created by Allah

عجيبة خلقها اللَه

تراها العيون

Seen by the eyes

I tell you, O people

أنا أقُل لكم يا ناس

إيش هي تكون

What it could be

A she-camel goes to fetch water

نويقة تروح بلمى

لبولاق تجي بالما

And returns with water

Neither named Selma

ولا اسمها سلمى

ولا هي زهور

Nor is it flowers

On its legs it walks

على رجلها تمشي

عليها رحيل محشي

On it a saddled camel

With reed straw, this thing

بقش القصب ذا الشي

عجب في الأمور

A wonder in matters

And it carries like a watermelon

وتحمل كما بطيخ

كثير له قشور

With much rind

I saw one day in the meadow

رأيت يوم في الروضة

بجنب الشطوط

Next to the banks

A captain pulling it

نُواتي يجرّه

مركبه بالخيوط

His boat with ropes

On its back an oar

على ظهرها مجداف

قويعد حدا جدّاق

Very sturdy, a pole

Hitting along the whole way

بطول الطريق ندّاف

وفوق الجسور

And over the bridges

You see it pulling licorice

تراه للّبان يسحب

مطاطي شبه أحدب

Rubber-like, somewhat humpbacked

However tired, it perseveres

يكابر متى يتعب

ويسقيك فجور

And quenches your thirst

And I go eat pastry

وآكل الكنافة أروح

وهي بالبخور

With incense
