في قامة الغصن إذ مرّت حلا التلف

لمُغرم قَتله الأحبابُ قد ألفوا

Her slender form passed by swaying

And those who love me to death have become accustomed

أمسى وقامته كالدال مُذ عبثت

منه بلام وياء في الهوى ألف

Last night her stature was like the letter Dal

After I had played with it, adding Lam and Ya out of love

ماست دلالاً وسامت قلبه صلفاً

سوء العذاب ومنها حبّذا الصلف

She was coquettish and hardened his heart

The agony and because of it I praised hardness

للقلب عدل إليها بعد معرفة

فكيف عنها مع الوضعين ينصرف

My heart has justice towards her after knowing

So how can it turn away from her considering both states

تظل تنصب كسر القلب جازمة

برفع وصلي ونحو الهجر تنعطف

She continues to break my heart insisting

On raising, connecting, and turning away from separation

تقضي بقتلي وهي الخصم عابثة

والخصم إذ صار يقضي كيف أنتصف

She decrees my murder while she plays

And when the opponent decrees, how can I seek justice?

أكاد أنكر حُبّاً تدّعيه على

قلبي ولكن لها بالحذق أعترف

I almost deny a love she claims over

My heart but I confess to her cleverness
