My eyes are fixed upon my heart, steadied
By patience fair and tears that give me strength
And can I ever hope for sleep weighed down
By sorrow, kept from rest, from slumber torn?
For beauty vanished when its home was lost
And absence but confirms the lover’s pain
The dust is now become for him a bed
As with a veil his cheek is covered o’er
My copious tears flow down my face in streams
From eyes on eyes on eyes that fill with tears
His noble soul was ransom for a friend
So chaste, so pure, forgiving and so true
The Lord has sent down mercy in the grave
Where he now rests, caressed by clouds of grace
