1. إِذا هَجَوتُكُمُ لَم أَخشَ سَطوَتَكُم

    وَإِن مَدَحتُ فَما حَظّي سِوى التَّعَبِ

    If I insult you, I fear not your tyranny,

    And if I praise you, my reward is but fatigue,

  2. فَحِينَ لَم أَلفِ لا خَوفاً وَلا أَمَلاً

    رَغِبتُ في الهَجوِ إِشفاقاً مِنَ الكَذِبِ

    So when I found neither fear nor hope,

    I desired satire to avoid lies.
