1. If you do not divide the provisions justly between us,

    you have squandered—and no squanderer keeps faith.

  2. And if you do not sustain the dependents against starvation,

    once they feel safe, they will not be protected when you take fright.

  3. Suppose al-Ward, the steed, had not been created for the day of battle—

    would you not still give and withhold by the sword?

  4. By God, nothing avails a whit when they raise the cry

    “Hold!”—save for the terror-stricken man to flee.
