1. يا هَلْ تُرى زمَنُ القَرينَةِ يَرْجِعُ

    أو مِثل كَوكَبِنا بِرامَةَ يَطلعُ

    Oh would the time of companionship return

    Or would a star like ours rise

  2. إنّ الذينَ من الوَداعِ تطيّرُوا

    والحَيُّ منهُم ظاعِنٌ ومُشيعُ

    Those who bid farewell were ever eager

    While those alive, forlorn and bidding adieu

  3. لو يعْلَمون من المقادر علمَنا

    لَشَفَوا من النظرِ العيونَ وودّعوا

    Had they any knowledge like the one we possess

    Their eyes would have feasted to utmost and bid adieu

  4. أنكرتُ عِزّي بعدَهم ومهنّدي

    عَضْبٌ وعزْمي في الكريهةِ أجمَعُ

    After their departure, I felt disgraced and weakened

    Severely dejected, yet firm against ordeals

  5. فاليومَ أُخدعُ بالسّرابِ فأطمعُ

    ويُراحُ لي سِجْنُ الهوانِ فأرتَعُ

    Today I’m fooled by the mirage with hope anew

    While my wretched cell seems like comfort I pursue

  6. ما كان يحسَبُ سيفُ دولةِ هاشمٍ

    أنّي لشيءٍ بعدَهُ أتضعضعُ

    Never had the sword of glorious Hashim ever thought

    That after them I would be in such lowly venue

  7. خالفتُه فيما أرادَ فِعالَهُ

    والدّهْرُ يفعلُ ما يُريدُ ويَصنعُ

    I opposed what they intended to commit

    While time does what it desires and puts in continuum

  8. فتركتُه يدْعو بأقصى صوتِهِ

    ويظُنّ أنّي غافلٌ لا أسْمَعُ

    So I let them cry loudly to their hearts’ content

    Thinking I’m oblivious and unable to construe

  9. لم يثْنِني بذْلُ الرّغائبِ نحوَهُ

    حتى انثَنى لي خدُّه والأخْدَعُ

    No amount of greed made me lean their way

    Until their cheeks and brows contorted in virtue

  10. لا يُبْعِدُ اللهُ الأراقمَ غِلْمَةً

    رَكِبوا الفِرارَ من الهَوانِ فأسْرَعوا

    Allah does not keep heroes bereaved for long

    They fled dishonor galloping without further ado

  11. ومقالَتي لهُم بتربتةِ مَنْبِجٍ

    ونحورُنا فيها الأسنّةُ تلْمَعُ

    And my address to them was at Manbij’s ruins

    Our swords glittering as our throats emit halloo

  12. لا تبخَلوا بنُفوسِكم عن وَقفةٍ

    عَذُبَ الحِمامُ بها وطابَ المَصْرَعُ

    Do not be stingy to stand your ground

    Where pigeons drink and the ground makes pleasant hue

  13. حَذَرَ المذلّةَ طارَ قيسٌ هارِباً

    لمّا رأى عَبْساً إلَيْها تَرجِعُ

    Fearing disgrace, Qais took flight

    When he saw it coming back to subdue

  14. فَمَضى يُداوي بالحِمامِ فؤادَهُ

    إنّ الحِمامَ من المذلّةِ ينفعُ

    So he went to heal his heart with pigeons

    As pigeons are the cure for degradation anew

  15. ما كانَ لو قبلَ الدنيّةَ خالداً

    فلأيِّ شيءٍ يسْتكينُ ويخضعُ

    It was never like Khalid to accept vility

    So why be timid and accept what is undue

  16. غنّيْتُ باسمِ أبي العَلاءِ ومَدْحِهِ

    رَكْباً على أكوارِهم لم يَهجَعوا

    I took pride in Abul Ala and his praises

    Riding high on their steeds that did not rest or sleep

  17. سَلبوا إليْهِ نشاطَ كلِّ نجيبةٍ

    حسَدَتْ قوائمَها الرياحُ الأربعُ

    Snatching vigor from each valiant soul

    As if the four winds envied their fleet

  18. طالعنَ شربةَ من معاركِ جوشَنٍ

    والشمسُ في أفقِ المغاربِ تضجَعُ

    We took a swig from battles of Jawshan

    As the sun settled beneath the distant blue

  19. وشَقَقْنَ أردِيةَ الظّلامِ بعَرعَرٍ

    ونُجومُهُ حولَ المجرةِ تكْرَعُ

    Tearing veils of darkness with our train

    Its stars around the galaxy subdue

  20. نَهْنَهْنَ مِنها وارداً لا يَرعَوي

    وثَنَيْنَ منها شارِباً لا يَنقعُ

    Sipping from it unquenched and unrestrained

    Bending again to drink without halt or queue

  21. حتى إذا لمَعَ الصّباحُ كأنّهُ

    ثَغْرٌ تبسّمَ عنه قَيْنٌ أسْفَعُ

    Till dawn shone like a smiling mouth

    Of a tall, beautiful beloved in rendezvous

  22. وعزفنَ في ريحِ الصَّبا من صاعدٍ

    نفحاتِ مسكٍ تستطيرُ وتَسطَعُ

    And we played in morning breeze sa’da tunes

    Whose fleeing whiffs glimmer and imbue

  23. كادت تُجَنُّ من الحنينِ وسامُها

    زُجرٌ يُقادُ بهِ الحَرونُ فيتبعُ

    Their passion almost drove them to madness

    As if horses prodded by whips in pursuit

  24. تَحْدو الجماجمُ بالمناسمِ بعدَما

    ألقى الحداةُ عِصيّهم وتَصدّعوا

    Skulls bounced with joy after swordsmen

    Cast their sticks no longer of use

  25. وبدا لَهُنّ مع الغزالةِ ماجدٌ

    أبْهى وأجملُ في العيونِ وأرْفَعُ

    To the gazelles, Majid appeared

    The most splendid, beautiful and tall in view

  26. سامي قناةَ الأنفِ تُبرقُ وجهَه

    في كلِّ خطبٍ يَدلَهِمُّ ويَفْظَعُ

    Lofty is the bridge of his nose, radiant his face

    Dazzling in every glance, imposing and bold too

  27. خِلْنا التّزعزعَ من سَجيّاتِ القَنا

    فإذا القَنا من خوفِه يتزعزعُ

    We terrified the prey till they shook in their boots

    And the prey shaken with fear unsettled in lieu

  28. وإذا مطارُ الهامِ حوّمَ فوقَه

    رفعتْ عَجاجَتَه النّسورُ الوُقَّعُ

    When the hawks hovered above

    The eagles carried it higher into the blue

  29. مالي رأيتُكَ لا تُسَرُّ بليلةٍ

    حتى تجوعَ بها وضيفُكَ يشبعُ

    Why is it I see you dissatisfied with a night

    Unless you and guest hunger and sleep without due

  30. وإذا كُفِرْتَ صنيعةً أسديتَها

    لم يَثنكَ الكفرانُ عمّا تَصنعُ

    And when a good deed is met with ingratitude

    You are not discouraged from what you continue to do

  31. أمن الصوارمِ نستعيرُ عَزائماً

    أمْ من عزائمكَ الصّوارمُ تُطْبَعُ

    Or is it from the swords we seek our courage

    Or is it from your courage, swords shaped anew

  32. أغنيتَ عِزَّ المُلكِ عن أنصارِهِ

    وقَمَعْتَ خَطْباً مثْلَهُ لا يُقْمَعُ

    You rendered the kingdom’s glory needless of aid

    And foiled the like of schemes never foiled in virtue

  33. مازلتَ تَطْمِسُ كلّ طرفٍ طامحٍ

    حتى انطَوى طيَّ الجريرِ الأشجعُ

    You continue to foil each ambitious glance

    Till the covers of the brave poet no more shine through

  34. وأبوه حينَ رأى الجزيرةَ جمرةً

    لا تُستَطاعُ وصَمغةً ما تُقلَعُ

    And when his father saw the peninsula inflamed

    Impossible to access or extract like stubborn glue

  35. فإذا السوابقُ كالسِّهامِ مَوارِقاً

    تجتابُ أرديةَ العَجاجِ وتَخْلَعُ

    Then the racers like arrows flew

    Tearing the veils of gloom rendered in two

  36. حتى رمى بكَ فوقَ آمالِ العِدى

    كالدّهْرِ تُعطى ما تَشاءُ وتَمنَعُ

    You were catapulted beyond the enemies’ dreams

    Like time you give whatever you desire to endue

  37. كَرِهوا طِعانَكَ إذْ مدَدْتَ إليهمُ

    كفّاً أنامِلُها رماحٌ شُرّعُ

    They disliked your piercing when you extended

    A hand whose fingers were spears unleashed unto

  38. ما تَعْدِمُ الرمحَ المثقفَ كعبَه

    في الحربِ مادامتْ بكفّكَ إصبَعُ

    The seasoned spear in war needs no enhancement

    As long as your fingers around it wrap robust and true

  39. فرت بنو لقْمانَ عن أحْسابِها

    والضّربُ يُنْثَرُ والأسنّةُ تُجْمَعُ

    The tribes of Luqman fled from its equation

    As swords flailed and tongues withdrew

  40. وكأنّما الأسيافُ يومَ لَقيتَهُم

    في الهامِ إجلالاً لوجهكَ تركَعُ

    It's as if the swords that day you met them

    Bowed down to you in ultimate debut

  41. وهم غُداةُ الدينِ يومَ تجمّعُوا

    جيشاً يَضيقُ به الفضاءُ ويَظلعُ

    And they, guardians of faith, when assembled

    An army that filled the horizon in its breadth and view

  42. علِموا عشيةَ واجهتكَ ظهورُهم

    أنّ الظُّبا بنفوسهم لا تَقنَعُ

    Knew the night before, encountering your assault

    That meager sustenance cannot their bellies subdue

  43. لمّا استغاثَ بكَ اللواءُ نصرتَهُ

    بيدٍ يصول بها الكَهامُ فيَقْطَعُ

    When the banner cried for help, you supported

    With a hand lions cower from in fear of its claw

  44. وفوارسٌ لا يحفظونَ نُفوسَهم

    إلاّ إذا نبذوا الحياةَ وضيّعوا

    And horsemen who cherish not their souls

    Save when they toss life and abandon it sans virtue

  45. وإذا تسربلت الدروعُ فإنّما

    هدفُ الرّماحِ نحورُهم والأضلُعُ

    When armors don they are the target

    Of spears toward their chests and ribs that cut through

  46. قومٌ سيوفُ الهندِ تطمعُ فيهمُ

    والعارُ في أعراضِهِمْ لا يطمعُ

    A people whose blood the Indian sword craves

    Yet shame their honor never dared pursue

  47. ما كانَ إلاّ لفتةً من ناظرٍ

    حتى عصفتَ بهمْ وفُضَّ المجمعُ

    It took but a gaze from the onlooker

    And you blew them away, disbanding troops hitherto

  48. ولّوا وكمْ هَزَمَتْهُمُ من طعنةٍ

    تنفي السبارَ وضربةٍ ما تُرقعُ

    Turning tails, how you defeated them with a stab

    That delivers death and a blow beyond rescue

  49. ومُفاضةٍ كَرهَ السنانُ جِدالَها

    قد مَرّ فيها الرمحُ لا يتَتَعْتَعُ

    An impetuous attack the spear dislikes to argue

    As the spear passes without stutter or ado

  50. وتبادرتْ أيديهمُ ورؤوسُهُمْ

    في الجوِّ تخفِضُها السيوفُ وتَرفعُ

    Their heads and hands took to the air

    Lowered and raised by the swords in remarkable hue

  51. فكأنّهُمْ حسِبوا النجومَ ذَوائباً

    فسَمَتْ إليْها هامُهُمْ والأذْرُعُ

    As if they mistook the stars for loose tresses

    And their passions towards it let imaginations accrue

  52. لكَ كلُّ يومٍ في المكارمِ غايةٌ

    تستصغِرُ الماضي لِما يُتَوقّعُ

    Each day has an unprecedented pinnacle in generosity

    Belittling the past for what may ensue

  53. فِطرٌ وصومٌ أنتَ فِينا قبلةٌ

    كالسّيفِ مخماصُ الأصائلِ أروعُ

    You are our Qiblah, fasting and feasting

    Most wondrous, like Indian swords that mete and hew

  54. لا تستفزِكَ حالةٌ عن حالةٍ

    هيهاتَ غيرُكَ بالخطوبِ يُروَّعُ

    No state can incite you over another

    Beyond you, who in calamity can stay their woe

  55. أمن القضيةِ أنْ تفوتَ أنامِلي

    ويدُ المقصِّرِ في نَداكَ تبَوَّعُ

    Can the cause afford my fingers to falter?

    As the inadequate hand begs in your debut

  56. كالغيثِ تُحرَمُه المزارعُ والقُرى

    حيناً وتُرزَقُهُ الفَلاةُ البَلْقَعُ

    Like rain deprived from meadows and villages

    At times, and gifted by barren valleys in dunes accrued

  57. سأسيرُ سيرَ فتىً تنظرَ بارقاً

    لم يروِهِ وهو السّحابُ الممرعُ

    I shall tread like a hero expecting vibrancy

    That even the nimble cloud has not yet viewed

  58. يأبى مُقامي في مكانٍ واحدٍ

    دهرٌ بتفريقِ الأحبّةِ مُولَعُ

    My sojourn declines staying in one place

    As time hates to keep beloved ones glued

  59. كفكِفْ قِسيّكَ يا فراقُ فإنّهُ

    لم يبقَ في قلْبي لسهمكَ موضعُ

    Stop tormenting me O separation

    For in my heart no place remains for your arrow to screw

  60. يومٌ أحرُّ من الصّبابةِ في الهَوى

    وأمَرُّ من ثكلِ البَنين وأوجَعُ

    A day hotter than embers in passion

    And bitterer than losing one’s dear children when they were new
