Every land is stripped of its youth,

But al-Mu'arra is not stripped of the noble one.

    All eyes turn to it,

Cast down before the cheeks of the shy one.

His sword has a side that protects him

And a side that assaults like flames.

It reveals what is behind the veil,

So we walked while night was the watcher's eye.

The spears of the sons of 'Adiyy bid us farewell,

Farewell, O brother of love and the beloved!

On our shoulders and our stallions

Their tongues utter sounds yearning to leap.

Our turning to look at them panics them,

So they fall or slip from their fetlocks.

And when we are distracted they cling to the cheeks,

Mistaken for the lines of grey hair.

We greet his persona, and he says "Welcome!"

    Exchanging eloquence for sullenness.

Your whiteness of hair is a sign of composure and wisdom,

But ignorance in the setting of life.

We have learned what you are ignorant of in the nights,

So knowledge of engagements is of no benefit.

Our love is a youth of the dogs

Whose attributes are arrows in hearts.

I returned his greeting and saw in him

Flirting that does not flirt with the wary.

So I said, "Do you not blame the enemies?"

He said, "Yes, and the length of the plateaus."

I will show you the sun in Homs as a girl

Who has become bleary-eyed from the vanishing west.

A night cloud with no rain in it

Except your walking and the running.

So O closer of nothing better,

You are the reliever of sorrows!
