1. ولم أرَ مثلَ الخمرِ للهمِّ شافياً

    إذا هي لم تلقَ الغيورَ المحامِيا

    I have not seen wine like sorrow as a healer,

    Unless it meets the jealous as an advocate.

  2. ولا كحِذارِ العارِ للثارِ طالباً

    ولا كذُبابِ السيفِ للجهلِ ناهيا

    Nor like the zeal of honor for the avenger,

    Nor like the flies of swords for the ignorant as a deterrent.

  3. يفوتُ ضجيعُ التّرّهاتِ طِلابُه

    ويَدنو إلى الحاجاتِ من كانَ ساعِيا

    The pursuits of delusions fail their seeker,

    While necessities come closer to the diligent.

  4. وسرٍ إلى العلياءِ لم أتخذْ لهُ

    صَديقاً ولم أُطلعْ عليهِ معاديا

    I have not taken any secret to the noble,

    As a friend, nor disclosed it to an enemy.

  5. إذا كان دائي خافِياً لم أبحْ بهِ

    فأيُّ طبيبٍ يخبرُ النّاسَ ما بِيا

    If my disease is hidden, I do not reveal it,

    So what doctor informs people of what ails me?

  6. تَخَيّرَ تاجُ المِلّةِ المَجْدَ واصْطَفَى

    من العِزِّ أهْوالاً تُشيبُ النّواصِيا

    The crown of the nation chose glory and selected

    From honor horrors that whiten the temples.

  7. يُفارقُ فيها رأسَه كلُّ مُعْلَمٍ

    فما تَعْلَمُ الراياتُ فيها العَوالِيا

    In it the guide loses his head,

    So the banners do not know its heights.

  8. طوى سِرَّهُ عن طَرفِه ولسانِهِ

    وأصبحَ لا يرضى من العيْشِ فانيا

    He folded his secret from his eyes and tongue

    And woke up not content with a fleeting life.

  9. وشاغَبَ رَيْبَ الدّهْرِ يَثلِمُ حَدّهُ

    ويَرجُم فيه منْ تَمنّى الأمانِيا

    He troubled the suspicions of fate to blunt its edge

    And stoned whoever wished for desires.

  10. فيوماً بحَمراء الهَواجرِ قائِظاً

    ويوماً ببيضاء الصّنابِرِ شاتِيا

    One day austere, ascetic,

    Another day relaxed, content.

  11. يُخبرُ عمّا في فؤادكَ ظنُّه

    وكان لأسرارِ الضّمائرِ فاليا

    His judgement tells what is in your heart

    As if he was privy to the secrets of consciences.

  12. وبين نجومِ القندَهار وبابِلٍ

    وبرقَةَ كيدٌ لا يَقيلُ الأعادِيا

    Between the stars of Orion and Babylon

    There is a plot that does not rest the enemies.

  13. يَدا ضيغم ناشَ الرماحَ ونشنَه

    وعاودَ مخضوبَ الذّراعينِ ضاريا

    A hand that unsheathed spears and sharpened them

    And persisted, arms bloodied, assailing.

  14. يعفُّ عن الصيدِ اللّئيمِ مَرامُهُ

    إذا عَدِمَ الأقرانَ أصبحَ طاوِيا

    His resolve shrinks from vile game

    When peers are absent, he becomes withdrawn.

  15. فباشرهم يَجلو صَفيحةَ وجهِه

    على أذرعٍ تَجْلو الصّفيحَ اليَمانيا

    So engage them, his face shines

    On arms whose shine adorns the Yemeni sword.

  16. وما أنصفتْ عندَ القِراعِ كَتيبةٌ

    مقنَّعةٌ تَلقى السّيوفَ العَواريا

    No troop has been equitable in combat

    Masked, meeting bare swords.

  17. حَلَفْتُ بأرْماحٍ تُعانِقُ صَبْوةً

    نُحورَ كِرامٍ يَعْشَقونَ المَعاليا

    I swore by spears that hug the loins

    Of generous souls who love glories.

  18. رأَوا حَدّها أحلى من الذُّلِّ مطعماً

    وأوفقَ من عيشٍ يكون تَلافيا

    They saw its edge sweeter than humiliation

    And more harmonious than a life of disgrace.

  19. وبالزمنِ التّاجي أنّ حِذارَهُ

    أراكَ ذِئابَ الرملِ تَحمي المَواشيا

    And by the royal time, beware

    I see you the wolves of the sands protecting the livestock.

  20. لَنَعْمَ مليكُ الأرضِ زاركَ راقياً

    لرأيكَ من داءِ العقوقِ مداويا

    How excellent, the king of the land visited you noble

    Seeking your view to cure the disease of disobedience.

  21. أخوكَ الذي يَحمي حِماكَ ويَبْتني

    عُلاكَ ويَرعى منكَ ما لست راعِيا

    Your brother who protects your sanctuary and fortifies

    Your ascent and observes what you do not watch.

  22. يَعِزُّ عليه أنْ تُلِمّ مُلِمّةٌ

    يكونُ بها هَشَّ المكارمِ خاوِيا

    It pains him that you are touched by any blemish

    Which leaves the noble virtues empty.

  23. وإنْ تصحبِ العلياءَ ذرعُكَ ضيقاً

    وهمُّكَ من كسْبِ المَحامِدِ خالِيا

    If your path amongst the elite is narrow

    And your care for praiseworthy gains is void,

  24. رميتَ بها رطبَ الشّمائلِ مُعْجَباً

    كأنّك ما أبصرتَ قبلَكَ راميا

    You have cast the ripe fruits of fine traits amazed

    As if before you, you have not seen a caster.

  25. فلا أنتَ فارقتَ الإمارةَ رغبةً

    ولا أنا ودّعْتُ الشّبيبةَ قالِيا

    Neither have you abandoned governance willingly

    Nor I bade farewell to youth forcefully.

  26. وفي كل يومٍ أنتَ راكبُ عَثْرةٍ

    تُخادعُ عنها المُبْصِرَ المتغاضِيا

    And everyday you ride a stumble

    That deceives the observant turning a blind eye.

  27. رعاكَ بعيني رقةٍ وفظاظةٍ

    وماطلكَ البغضاءَ غضبانَ راضِيا

    I shepherded you with gentle and stern eyes

    Not angry with the hateful, appeased.

  28. يُسَدّدُ قبلَ الطّعنِ رأياً مثقفاً

    يَرُدُّ سنانَ الرّمحِ أبكَمَ نابِيا

    It assesses before the stab, a cultivated view

    That blunts the fang of the spear, muzzled and restrained.

  29. وتعدمُ في الجيشِ العَرَمْرَمِ حازماً

    وإن كنتَ فيه لست تَعْدَمُ حامِيا

    You lack in the noisy army a wise one

    Even if you are not without a protector.

  30. ولمّا توقّتْ جمرةُ الحربِ نارها

    وأصبحَ لا يرجو الأسيرُ مفاديا

    And when the embers of war kindled their fire

    And prisoners no longer hoped for redemption,

  31. عَفا مطرقُ الأحقادِ عن كلّ زلةٍ

    لَها ناسياً في القومِ أو مُتناسيا

    The hammer of grudges overlooked every mistake

    Forgetting among the people or feigning to forget.

  32. وأعرضَ عن ذكرِ الضّغائنِ غالبٌ

    على الحزمِ يمضي منه ما كان ماضِيا

    And the conqueror turned away from the mention of resentments

    Led by resolve, allowing bygones to be bygones.

  33. إذا كنتَ تولي كل شيءٍ كرهتَه

    عِتابكَ عاتبتَ الرياحَ الهَوافيا

    If you blame everything you hated

    You would blame the blowing winds.

  34. لعَمري لقد أذكى الهمامُ بأرضِهِ

    مُشَهَّرَةً ينْتابُها الفخرُ صالِيا

    By my life, he ignited spirits in his land

    Raising it, pride residing in it.

  35. تغيبُ النجومُ الزهرُ عندَ طلوعِها

    وتَحْسُدُ أيامُ الشّهورِ اللّيالَيا

    The stars disappear at his rise

    And the days of the months envy the nights.

  36. قِلادةُ مَجْدٍ أغفلَ الدّهْرُ نَظمَها

    عليهِ وقد جرَّ السِّنينَ الخَوالِيا

    A necklace of glory time forgot to string on him

    Although years have pulled down the ruins.

  37. وقاسَ بني شَمْرٍ بآلِ مُحَرّقٍ

    وغربلَ ألفاظَ الوَرى والمَعانيا

    And he measured the people of Shammar by the house of Muhraq

    And sifted the diction of mankind and meanings.

  38. هي الليلةُ الغَرّاءُ في كلِّ شَتْوَةٍ

    تُغادِرُ جيدَ الليلِ أتلعَ حالِيا

    It is the lovely night in every winter

    That leaves the cheek of night darker in calamity.

  39. ولابدّ من شَعْواءَ يَبْرقُ خالُها

    بغَيْرِ سَحابٍ يتركُ الجوَّ دامِيا

    Necessarily from a bleak cloud its birthmark flashes

    Without clouds leaving the atmosphere gloomy.

  40. عسى وقعُها بعدَ التّعَلُّلِ والمُنى

    على النأيِ يَشفى من كُتامَةَ دائيا

    Maybe its occurrence after hardship and affliction

    In seclusion heals the darkness of my condition.

  41. وأعجَبكم من جانِبِ الرّملِ ماطِرٌ

    تُراعي الغُرَيْرِيّاتُ فيه المَذاكِيا

    And you are pleased by a rain from the sands

    While the meadows therein observe the livestock.

  42. أظنّ الطوالَ الشمَّ لا يتركونَها

    سِوى العامِ تَرعى من قُراقِرَ وادِيا

    I think the tall-statured people will not leave it

    Except for the year to pasture whatever is in the valley.

  43. ولا يقبلونَ النصفَ حتى يُعَجِّلوا

    وفاءَ غَريمٍ يَجْعَلُ السّيفَ قاضِيا

    They will not accept half until they hasten

    The fulfillment of debt that makes the sword the judge.

  44. ولو جفتِ الغُدرانُ دونَ مسيرِه

    لأنبطَ نَهراً في السّماوةِ جارِيا

    If the lowlands dried up before his march

    He would carve a river in the plateau flowing.

  45. ببيضِ الظُّبى يَنْفي دُجى الليل رائحاً

    وبالنّقْعِ يُبْهي مَطْلَعَ الشّمسِ غادِيا

    With the white oryx he denies the gloom of night traveling

    And with settlement masks the rising of the traversing sun.

  46. يُغيِّرُ آثارَ القرونِ التي خَلَتْ

    ويَجعَلُ أخبارَ الملوكِ مَلاهِيا

    He changes the relics of past generations

    And makes the chronicles of kings a distraction.
