1. اذا كانَ عن فَرطِ المَلالِ التَّفَرُّقُ

    فانَّ النَوى بي من سُلُوكَ أَرفقُ

    If separation is due to boredom with routine

    My determination is more compassionate in conduct

  2. وأي فتى قبل الغرامِ وبعدَهُ

    تمنَّى الذي منه يَخافُ ويشفِقُ

    And which youth before or after falling in love

    Wishes for what he fears and is cautious of

  3. وما خلتُ أَنَّ الشوقَ والنأيَ والبكا

    وفقدَ الكَرى مما أَلذُّ وأَعشقُ

    Neither my longing, remoteness, nor weeping cease

    Nor the loss of a loved one however pleasant and beloved

  4. أَخِيبُ ويَحظى بالغنيمةِ عاجزٌ

    ولا يَعْدَمُ النُّجحَ المُعَانُ الموفَّقَ

    I fail while an incapable finds success

    Perseverance never lacks triumph and blessings

  5. وفذٍ من الفتيانِ يأنفُ وحدَهُ

    بِنَا وبِهِ من سَورِةِ العزِّ أَولقُ

    Among the youth is one who disdains

    Me and him from the Chapter of Might first I recite

  6. أُسِرُّ وأُبدي الوجدَ يومَ وَدَاعِه

    كأَني أَسيرٌ للضريبةِ موثَقُ

    I conceal and reveal my passion the day of his farewell

    As if I am a prisoner bound by tax I abide

  7. يرى الصبر أَولى بالفتى فيُطيعه

    ويُدركه حبُّ الحياةِ فيقلَقُ

    He sees patience more becoming so he obeys it

    And the love of life urges him so he is restless

  8. وأَعييتَني لا في الاضاعةِ حَازمٌ

    ولا في مخيلاتِ المَطَامعِ أَحْمَقُ

    You did not tire me with determination or

    With fanciful ambitions make me a fool

  9. كأني بنجدٍ أَنشدُ الذئبَ نعجةً

    رعى شِلْوَهَا بالأَمسِ فهو ممزَّقُ

    As if I called upon the wolf in Nejd for a ewe

    That yesterday grazed its outskirts so it was torn

  10. أُسَائِلُهُ اذْ عارضته طَريدةٌ

    فمرَّ على آثارها يَتَدَفَّقُ

    I ask about it when a gazelle rivaled it

    So it passed by its tracks oozing

  11. سَلا كلُّ مُشْتَاقٍ يبوحُ بشَجْوِهِ

    ولم يُسْلني الكتمانُ والحزمُ أَوفقُ

    Every lover laments his burning passion

    But silence and resolve did not suit me

  12. فسقياً لأرضِ الشامِ لو أَنَّ ذكرها

    يَشِحُّ بأَلبابِ الرجالِ ويَرفُقُ

    If only praise of Damascus’ land

    Would inspire people’s minds and treat gently

  13. ولله مهضومُ الربى من رِحابها

    يمر به عافي النَّسيمِ فيعبَقُ

    Its desolate prairie where the gentle breeze blows

    Exudes fragrance as it passes unfettered

  14. يُباهي بياضَ الأُقْحُوَانِ بَهَارُهُ

    للونِ ضُحاهُ والعشيَّاتِ رَونَقُ

    Its blossoms in spring surpassing whiteness

    Radiant in the morning and charming at eve

  15. وأَغيدُ في أَجْفَانِهِ سِنَةُ الكرى

    نعرتُ به والليلُ بالصبح أَروقُ

    I detect in its eyelids the tattoos of sorrow

    I stay up with it as night turns to dawn unfazed

  16. فَقَدْ خَانَنَي ذاكَ النشاطُ ومَلَّنِي

    مَلولٌ شكاهُ تُبَّعٌ ومحرِقُ

    That vigor which I had has betrayed me

    Wearied, complaining, scorched, and fatigued

  17. وأَنزلني طولُ الشَّقاءِ ببلدَةٍ

    يؤرقني فيها الشَّرابُ المُرَوّقُ

    The length of woes brought me down to a land

    Where the pure wine keeps me sleepless

  18. بها المِسكُ والكافورُ يُعَدَمُ نَشرُه

    وريحُ الصَّبَا فيها مع الفَجْر تُعرَقُ

    It lacks musk and camphor's diffusion is hindered

    The morning breeze makes one perspire

  19. مَدىً لرهانِ النائباتِ كأَنني

    لها غرضٌ دونَ الخلائقِ يُرشقُ

    A playground for the blows of fate, it seems

    I am there for a reason unlike all people

  20. ولي رُفقةٌ شتَّى النِّجارِ جعلتُها

    مواقعَ لحظي والحَوادثُ تَطرُقُ

    And I have different mounts which I made

    Instruments for my pleasure as events knock

  21. وللضَّرْبِ هَزْهَازٌ وللطعن عاسِلٌ

    وللرحْلِ شَوْشاةٌ وللرَكضِ خَيفَقُ

    One for striking, one for stabbing,

    One for traveling, and one for galloping

  22. أَولئكَ من صاحبتُه فهو ماهِرٌ

    صَنَاعٌ ومن فارقتُه فهو أَخرَقُ

    They are skillful when I kept them

    An artisan, and ragged when we parted

  23. أولئكَ من صاحبتُه فهو ماهِرٌ

    لهنَّ عن البيداءِ والآلُ يَخفِقُ

    They are adept when I accompanied them

    Veering from the plain as flags flap

  24. ومدَّتْ على شَمسِ النهارِ ملاءةً

    مُنَمْنَمَةً فيها النجومُ تألَّقُ

    It unfurled its canopy on the sun

    Glittering with stars shining bright

  25. فَوَيْلُمِّها لو عَرَّسَتْ عند غايةٍ

    ومُحْتَقِرُ الغاياتِ لا يَتَرفَّقُ

    Woe to it, if it cleared at the peak

    While the greatest looks down on peaks aloof

  26. لمن نِعَمٌ لما رَعَتْ مطمئنةً

    نَفَاهَا ذُبابٌ في الثعالبِ أَزرَقُ

    When at ease what good are blessings

    If they are disturbed by flies gathering

  27. أَغار عليها عدوة الذئبِ عائفٌ

    يُخَبِّرُ عما في الغُيوبِ فيصدُقُ

    A prowling wolf envied it, circulating

    Informing about the unseen, and he speaks true

  28. تبيت بأَفواه الثغورِ جيادُهُ

    سوالِفُها فيها الحديدُ المُعَلَّقُ

    Its steeds remain at the borders of the lands

    Their weapons suspended, polished iron

  29. حَطَمْنَ بجُرجَانَ القنا غيرَ أكعُبٍ

    لدولابَ كانتْ في الجَوانحِ تُشْرِقُ

    They destroyed Jurjan's bridges but not Akub's

    Which glowed in their chests radiant

  30. ومثلكَ يا كافي الكفاةِ أَعادَها

    تُسابقُ أَلحَاظَ العيونِ فتسْبِق

    And one like you, O sufficient patron

    Returned them racing the eyes so preceding

  31. مسافةُ ما بينَ الخُوارِ وآملٍ

    يَضيقُ بها والجَوُ بالنقعِ أَضيقُ

    The distance between Khuwar and Amal

    Is narrow, while the atmosphere is even narrower

  32. تَقَطَّعَتِ الأَرحامُ الاَّ قواطِعاً

    تَحُوْم على هضامِ الرجالِ وتخفِقُ

    Kinship is severed except by executioners

    Who ambush on the flanks of men and flap

  33. ونصرٌ مع العَيُّوقِ في مُشْمَخِرَّةٍ

    يناوحهُ فيها السّمِاكُ المُحَلِّقُ

    And victory alongside courage in Mushakkarah

    Where the fish hawk contends veering

  34. كأَن ظهورَ الطير دونَ مَقيلِهِ

    زَرابيُّ سَدَّى وشيَهُهنَّ المنمِّقُ

    As if the birds' backs below its nest

    A peacock's train, though they are groomed

  35. ولم يدرِ أَنَّ الحضْرَ أَسلَمَ رَبَّهُ

    ومن دونهِ سورٌ منيفٌ وخَنْدَقُ

    And it did not know that the town surrendered its Lord

    With a lofty wall and moat surrounding

  36. رآها تَعُلُّ النقعَ منه فخالَها

    أَمامَ السَّواقى سُرَبةً وهي فيلَقُ

    It saw it transcending its marsh so it imagined it

    To be a herd of horses in the meadow

  37. وما ضرها أنْ كان في سَرَعَانشها

    الى الطعنِ أَطرافِ القنا يتنزَّقُ

    And it did not harm it that in its galloping

    Were the tips of spears toward its chest protruding

  38. أناتضكَ يا ابنَ الفَيرُزان فانَّها

    شمائلُ دَهْرٍ بالفتى يَتَصَفَّقُ

    Be patient O son of Fayruzan, for such is

    The way of fate with man, so very mocking

  39. قليلٌ بها الانسانُ الا حديثَه

    وأَيُّ حديثٍ لا يُمَل فيخلُقُ

    Man is too little for it except for his talk

    And which talk does not bore so one yawns?

  40. كأَنْ لم يكن من بعدِ ما هو كائنٌ

    فلا غرَّنى هذا الخَيالُ الملفَّقُ

    As if nothing will be after what has transpired

    So do not let this futile imagining deceive me

  41. تركتُ سَواماً بالحمى لك شَطْره

    وأَقبلتَ في حَافاتِهِ تَتَسَرَّقُ

    I left you half the sanctuary and you

    Entered its outskirts furtively sneaking

  42. مرافقةُ السِّرْحَانِ أَدنى عَدُوه

    أخوهُ اذا ضَافَ اللوى وهو مُخْفِقُ

    The closest enemy to the she-camel is its brother

    When the curve of its neck bends as it walks

  43. أَعقكما أَو فاكما وكلاكما

    به غَدرةٌ من شَابِكِ العِرقِ أَعرَقُ

    I seek refuge from you both, and both

    Have betrayal in the twisting of the rope

  44. تنم عليه عينُه ولسانُهُ

    يكذِب ما في العين والعينُ أَصْدَقُ

    His eye sleeps on it while his tongue

    Lies against the eye though the eye is more honest

  45. وما طلكَ البغْضَاءَ حتى سئمتَها

    طليعةُ آجالٍ من السُم مِتْأَقُ

    You did not crave hatred until you wearied of it

    The vanguard of death terms sipping little by little

  46. علا ثَبج الطوفانِ في الفلكِ وحدَهُ

    وكانَ رضيعَ الدهرِ أَو هو أَعتَقُ

    He alone survived the flood in the ark

    Though just born or even just weaned

  47. أَخو الرأى اسماعيلُ انَّ أَناتَهُ

    لها من أَعاديه اللُّهَا والمُخَنَّقُ

    O wise counselor Ismail your patience

    Earns the gratitude and choking of enemies

  48. ضحوكٌ ببسطِ الوجهِ يرفَعُ ثغْرَهُ

    عن اللهوِ لا يجفو ولا يتمَلَّقُ

    Laughing with a bright face, he lifts his mouth

    From frivolity, neither sullen nor fawning

  49. كفاه علّوُ القَدْرِ كُلفةَ مَدْحِهِ

    ويَغنى عن الطَّوق الحَمامُ المُطَوَّقُ

    The loftiness of fate suffices to oblige his praise

    While the crowned pigeon needs no collar

  50. وأَروعُ وضاحُ الجبين ثيابُه

    رعابيلُ ريط أو دِلاصُ مُخَرَّقُ

    Radiant is the shine of his forehead, his clothes

    Raiments of Rait or an old Dhilas torn

  51. له خُلُقٌ باقٍ على الفَقْرِ والغِنَى

    وما آفةُ الأخْلاقِ الاَّ التَّخَلَقُ

    He has lasting morals in poverty and riches

    And nothing corrupts morals like pretending

  52. ومعتركٍ بين الخُصُومِ شَهِدْتَهُ

    كما شَهِدَ الروعَ السنانُ المذلَّقُ

    I saw him intervene between disputants

    As the awe of the sparkling blade intervenes

  53. على خطرٍ تَنسى به الأَلسنُ الحِجَى

    فتخرُسُ فيه والفرائضُ تنطِقُ

    At a predicament where tongues forget decency

    So they fall silent while duties speak

  54. فَرقْتَ به بين الضَّلالةِ والهُدى

    كما فَرَّقَ الفَودَينِ في الرأس مَفْرِقُ

    You clarified through him the misguidance and guidance

    As the parting of hair clarifies what crowns the head

  55. وشتانَ سَهْمٌ في الجَوانحِ نَصْلُهُ

    وآخرُ في عُرضِ البوارحِ يَمْرُقُ

    Far apart is an arrow piercing the heart

    And another brushing the sides of limbs and darting

  56. لقد غَلَبَ الأَعداءَ حزماً وقوةً

    صموتٌ على طولِ الضغينةِ مُطْرِقُ

    He surely defeated enemies with wisdom and strength

    Silent about the length of resentment contemplating

  57. هم سَبروا قَعْرَ الذي أَنتَ طالبٌ

    فما وصلوا هيهاتَ غورُك أَعْمَقُ

    They plumbed the depth you seek

    Alas! Your depth is far deeper

  58. أَلم ترنى نلتُ المَحَامدَ وادعِاً

    وما كلُّ من يَسترزقُ الحَمْدَ يُرزَقُ

    Do you not see me gain praise while professing

    Though not all who seek praise will be granted?

  59. أَصدُ عنِ الزَّادِ الذي هو مُونقُ

    ولا يَطَّبِيْنِي العَارضُ المتأَلِّقُ

    I avoid gifts that are flashy

    And the chance encounter does not please me

  60. واني وان لم أعْدمِ العِزَّ كلَّهُ

    لأَعلمُ أَنَّ العيشَ عندكَ أوفَقُ

    Though I never lacked glory entirely

    I know living with you is far more favorable

  61. عسى عُقَبُ الأَيامِ تجَمَعُ بينَنَا

    وقد يُنصَرُ الجدُّ الحَرُونُ فيلْحَقُ

    Perhaps later days will unite us

    And the River Herun will join its waters
