1. أقِمْ في القولِ من نفسي دَليلا

    فإن الصدقَ ما زرعَ القَبولا

    Establish truth from my soul as proof,

    For truthfulness plants acceptance.

  2. وأكدارُ المشاربِ ليسَ تَشْفي

    غليلَ فتىً يَعافُ السّلسَبيلا

    And cups of drink do not cure

    The anguish of a youth who shuns the easy path.

  3. إذا استخبرتَ أوْ خيرتَ فاقصدْ

    حُزونَ الصّدقِ واجْتنبِ السُهولا

    If you ask or choose, then intend

    The grief of truth and avoid negligence.

  4. وخبِّرْ حيَّنا سعداً بأنّا

    تركنا العذلَ يَزْدَرِدُ العَذولا

    And inform Saad when glad

    That we left complaining to ramble confused.

  5. وخوَّفَنا السَماوةَ هادِياها

    فَصيّرنا الهميمَ بها كَفيلا

    And we frightened Al-Samawa, guiding it,

    So we made the slanderer responsible for it.

  6. وجارَيْنا النّوى حتى تَرَكنا

    مُكِلاً من قوائِهما كَليلا

    And we ran with determination until we left

    A heavy burden from its leaders exhausted.

  7. فهلْ أبقتْ لهم جَفْناً مريضاً

    وهل تركت لهم خداً أسِيلا

    Did it leave behind ailing eyelids for them

    And did it leave for them a submissive cheek?

  8. ومَنْ هامَ الغَرامُ بهِ فإنّا

    بحيث نُعَلِّمُ الصبَّ الذهولا

    And whoever passion ravished, we

    Teach the youngster bewilderment.

  9. بأرضِ الرومِ نَعتَنِقُ المَواضي

    ونَمْتَهِدُ المُسوّمَةَ الفُحولا

    In the land of Rome we embrace meadows

    And pursue the valiant heroes.

  10. ونُنشئُ من دمائِهم سَحاباً

    تُكشِّفُ من قَساطِلها نُحولا

    And from their blood we form clouds

    That uncover from their vessels skulls.

  11. نطيعُ اللهَ في خوضِ المَنايا

    وسيفَ الدولةِ الملكَ الجَليلا

    We obey God in plunging into deaths

    And the sword of the State, the noble king.

  12. إذا طلبتْ ملوكُهُم لدينا

    ذُحولَ الحَربِ زدْناهُم ذُحولا

    If their kings sought from us

    The migration of war, we increased migration.

  13. إذا ما أرسَلوا جيْشاً إليْنا

    رَدَدْنا من دمائِهم رَسولا

    If they sent an army to us

    We sent back from their blood a messenger.

  14. يسيلُ إليهم فإذا أتاهُم

    رأوا فيه الجَماجمَ والخَصيلا

    It flows to them, so when it came to them

    They saw in it skulls and bones.

  15. وقال لنا الزمانُ ظَلمتُموهُمْ

    فقلنا للزّمانِ دع الفُضولا

    And time said to us, "You wronged them,"

    So we said to time, "Stop the superfluity."

  16. سَرى بالخيلِ يَمنعها المَخالي

    وتمنعُهُ التمهلَ والنُزُولا

    It traveled with horses, the places prevent it

    And its leisure and descent prevent it.

  17. نَسينا النُطقَ هيبةَ شَفرتيهِ

    كما نسِيَتْ من الدّأبِ الصّهيلا

    We forgot eloquence in awe of its blade

    As the horses forgot their whinnying.

  18. وطوفَ في بلادِ الرومِ حتى

    توهّمناهُ قد ضَلّ السَبيلا

    And it roamed the land of Rome until

    We imagined it had lost its way.

  19. وكيف يضِلُّ في سبلِ المَعالي

    فتىً جعلَ الحُسامَ له دَليلا

    But how can it get lost in the ways of glory,

    A lad who made the sword his guide?

  20. كأنّ حصونَهم نادتْ نِداه

    أو اختارتْ لساكنِها بَديلا

    As if their citadels called out

    Or chose for its dwellers another.

  21. فأعطَتهُ الذي تَحوي عَطاءً

    جَزيلاً مثلَ ما يُعطى جَزيلا

    So it gave what it contains of bounty

    Plentifully, as plentifully given.

  22. كأنّ بلادَهمْ ضَمّتْ عليهِ

    جوانِحَها مخافةَ أنْ يَزولا

    As if their country gathered for it

    Its limbs, fearing that it might leave.

  23. تُطيَّبُ من روائِحِه المَغاني

    وتَروى من سحائبِه الطُلولا

    The melodies are scented from its fragrances

    And the hills are watered from its clouds.

  24. كأنّ الخيلَ من مرحٍ ولهوٍ

    تُنزعهُ إذا تركَ الرّحيلا

    As if the horses in play and amusement

    Were restrained when it stopped traveling.

  25. دِقاقاً كالأهلّةِ في الأعادي

    تُعلِّمُ من ذوابِلهِ النّحُولا

    Slim like the crescent during enemies

    Teaching its dangling straps to dangle.

  26. بدربِ القُلّتينِ رَنونَ حُوراً

    وأرسَلها على هِنْزِيْطَ حُولا

    At Darb Al-Qiltatayn, it dispatched nymphs

    And unleashed them upon Hinzeit horses.

  27. يُخوضها الفُراتَ فتىً يُلاقي

    بوجهِ الموتِ في الغمراتِ سُولا

    A lad who plunges into the Euphrates

    Meeting death's face in the deep tumult.

  28. ولو أنّ الفراتَ عَصى عليهِ

    لردّ السّيلَ عنه أنْ يَسيلا

    Had the Euphrates disobeyed him

    It would have sent the torrent back not to flow.

  29. فما ضحِكَتْ بحِصنِ الرّانِ حتى

    بكتْ حلبٌ ورجعتِ العَويلا

    So it did not laugh at Hisn Al-Ran

    Until Aleppo cried and the wailing returned.

  30. فكرّتْ نحوَ عولتها رُجوعاً

    كتكرارِ الليوثِ حمَتْ شُبولا

    It retreated toward its den, returning

    Like the lions' reversal when their cubs howled.

  31. إلى بَحرٍ بمَرْعَشَ من حَديدٍ

    فأوردَها شرائعَهُ سُيولا

    To a sea armored with iron

    So it made it drink its torrents.

  32. فقالوا هاكَ قُسطِنْطِينَ خُذهُ

    ونَهنه من أعنّتِها قَليلا

    And they said, "Here, Constantine, take it

    And save it from much of its trouble."

  33. فرفّعَ من جُسومِهم عَجاجاً

    وجشّمَها إلى الفلكِ القَفولا

    So he raised his ghosts against them

    And it threw them to the revolving heaven.

  34. وفي ظهرِ الأُحَيْدِبِ حمّلَتْهُمْ

    خِفاف سيوفِه عبئاً ثَقيلا

    And on Mount Uhaydir it burdened them

    With the lightness of its swords a heavy load.

  35. تألفتِ الجَماجمُ والهوادي

    كما تتألفُ الغُررُ الحُجولا

    The skulls and the valleys mingled

    As precious pearls mingle.

  36. تركتَ الثائرَ العجلانَ منهم

    وقد نصّلَ الطليعةَ والرّعيلا

    You left the raging, crazed ones among them

    Having picked out the vanguard and the stragglers.

  37. يُلاقي الرمحَ بينَ حَشاهُ سيفاً

    تحدّرَ من مفارقهِ عَجولا

    Meeting the spear amidst its innards with a sword

    Sliding from its edges swift.

  38. وقد جعلوا بَراكاءَ المَنايا

    لأسؤقِهم وأرجلهم كُبولا

    It pounds the chest, embracing it, pleased,

    And it is not pleased when the singer sings.

  39. تَخالُهم وقد نزلوا قُعودا

    وتحسِبهم وقد ركبوا نُزولا

    As if they, when they were war-weary,

    Walked into its swords distracted.

  40. فمضروبٌ يردُّ السيفَ صَلتاً

    على يافوخِ ضاربهِ جَهولا

    So the struck returns the sword a blessing

    Upon the cheek of his ignorant striker.

  41. ومَطعونٍ مشى في الرُمْحِ يَسْعى

    لطاعنهِ فجدّلَهُ قَتيلا

    And the pierced walked on the spear, hastening

    To his stabber, so he made him a corpse.

  42. يدُقُّ الصّدرَ مُعتنقاً فيرضى

    ولا يرضى إذا دقَّ التّليلا

    It pounds the chest, hugging it, pleased,

    And it is not pleased when the waker awakens.

  43. كأنّهُمُ وقد ثَمِلوا ضِراباً

    تَساقوا في سُيوفِهم شَمولا

    As if they, when laden with blows,

    Walked into their swords randomly.

  44. فلمّا لم يدعْ رُمحاً طويلاً

    يُقصِّدُهُ ولا سيفاً نَحيلا

    So when it left no long spear

    That it intended, nor thin sword,

  45. ولا طِرفاً يُقَحِّمُهُ مَهولاً

    ولا ملِكاً يُغادِرُهُ ذَليلا

    No nipple that it plunged confused,

    Nor king that it spared disgraced,

  46. وملّ الموتُ أنْفُسَ من يُعادي

    فجاءَ إليهِ منها مُستَقيلا

    And death was fed up with those who opposed,

    So it came to it resigning,

  47. فدَى من كانَ أسلمَهُ سِواهُ

    بما كانَ السِّنانُ لهُ مُنيلا

    It ransomed those whose salvation was its sword

    With what the blades had ripening.

  48. وقالوا عن مَلَطْيَةَ لا مَحيصٌ

    يُسَلّمُ من مُحيّاكَ النُصولا

    And they said about Malatya, "There is no escape

    To surrender to your descending eagles."

  49. ودونَ مَلَطْيَةَ الشُّم اللواتي

    ثَباتُ الطّرفِ يَصحبُها ذَليلا

    And before Malatya are the northern ladies

    Whose gaze is accompanied by humiliation.

  50. تكادُ تَميلُ من شَوقٍ إليهِ

    فتَمْنَعُها المهابةُ أنْ تَميلا

    They almost incline toward it in longing

    But awe prevents them from inclining.

  51. ولمّا حلّ كَركَرَ مُستَهلاً

    يُضيفُ إلى الفراتِ نَداهُ نِيلا

    And when Karakar was captured, unleashing

    Its caller to the Euphrates as booty,

  52. تقولُ إذا رأيتَ السَّفْنَ فيه

    أظنُّ الحيَّ قد رفَعَ الحُمولا

    It says, when you see the ships in it,

    "I think the living had raised the load."

  53. حَشاهُ كلُّ مَركوبٍ رَكوبٍ

    تذرّعَ هادياً فيه ضَليلا

    Its innards every ship sailing

    Clothed, lost in it, a guide.

  54. فسالَمَهُمْ ولم يتركْ فَتاةً

    وحارَبَهُمْ ولم يتركْ حَليلا

    So it greeted them and left no maiden

    And fought them and left no pregnant one.

  55. ومن أوالِهم فكّ الأسارَى

    وعن أزواجِهم أعطى البُعولا

    And of their homes it undid the captives

    And of their wives it gave the lonely ones gifts.

  56. يَراهُ كلُّ مأسورٍ فَيدعو

    ألا حَسبي به وكفى وكيلا

    Every captive sees it, so he prays,

    “My sufficiency is in it, enough is it as protector.”

  57. فِداؤُكَ مَنْ فَديتَ من البَرايا

    وإنْ كانوا لأنْ تُفْدى قَليلا

    Your ransom is whoever you ransomed from perdition,

    Even if they were few to be ransomed.

  58. فأنتَ خلقتهم خلقاً جَديداً

    وصيّرتَ السّماحَ بِهم كَفِيلا

    You created them a new creation,

    And you made generosity responsible for them.

  59. تَزيدُ بحسنِهِ الدُنيا ضِياءً

    وأبصارُ الملوكِ بهِ كُلولا

    With its beauty, it increases the world radiance,

    And the eyes of kings by it are delighted.

  60. ولم أرَ مثلَ هذا اليومِ يوماً

    يَرُدُّ فوارسَ الأيّامِ مِيلا

    And I have not seen a day like this day,

    Repelling the horsemen of days inclined.

  61. تَناساهُ فتشأَى الشمسُ بعداً

    وتذكرهُ فتَبتدِرُ الذبولا

    It forgot it, so the sun shunned distance,

    And remembered it, so the withering hurried.

  62. إذا ما جئْتَ والأملاكُ جمعاً

    غدوتَ نَباهَةً وغَدَوْا خُمولا

    If you came and the kings altogether

    You rose as clarity and they rose confused.

  63. أحقّهم ببذلِ المالِ فينا

    فتىً يُمسي لمهجتهِ بَذولا

    The one among them most deserving to spend wealth on us

    Is a lad who stays up late with his mind wandering.

  64. وأولاهم بأنْ يُسمى جَواداً

    فتىً يهَبُ الرّغائِبَ والعُقولا

    And the foremost of them to be called generous

    Is a lad who gives hopes and minds.

  65. رَعى روضَ الأسِنّةِ مُستميتاً

    يظُنُّ حياتَهُ كَلاً وَبيلا

    He grazed the garden of tongues eagerly,

    Deeming his life meager and fleeting.

  66. تُريكَ بَنانُهُ في كلِّ يومٍ

    طِعاناً مُحْيِياً ونَدى قَتولا

    Its structure shows you every day

    Stabbing enlivening and the call of war.

  67. وفضلاً يَستفيدُ الدهرُ منهُ

    كريمَ الطّبعِ والخُلق الجَميلا

    And a merit that time benefits from

    Of noble nature and beautiful manners.

  68. يرى النّيلَ المُحصّلَ منه وعداً

    وتُعجِلُهُ العَطايا أنْ يَقولا

    He sees the Nile, fulfilled from him a promise,

    And the gifts hasten him to speak.

  69. يُصيِّرُ كلَّ مِقدامٍ جَباناً

    ويجعلُ كلَّ مِعطاءٍ بَخيلا

    He makes every bold one a coward

    And makes every giver stingy.

  70. سألتُ الدهرَ عما قلتُ فيهِ

    فما قالتْ صروفُ الدهرِ لي لا

    I asked time about what I said of it

    But the turns of time did not say “no” to me.
