يَداهُ يَدٌ تَنهَلُّ بِالخَيرِ وَالنَدى
وَأُخرى شَديدٌ بِالأَعادي ضَريرُها
His two hands: one shines with goodness and generosity;
the other deals his enemies grievous harm.
وَناراهُ نارٌ نارُ كُلِّ مُدَفَّعٍ
وَأُخرى يُصيبُ المُجرِمينَ سَعيرُها
And his two fires: one is every destitute person’s hearth;
the other—its blaze strikes the guilty.
أَلَم تَرَ أَنَّ الوَحشَ يُخدَعُ مَرَّةً
وَيُخدَعُ أَحياناً فَيَصطادُ نورُها
Have you not seen that wild game may once be beguiled,
and at times be beguiled, so that its light catches it?
بَلى وَضَواريَ الطَيرِ تُخفِقُ مَرَّةً
وَإِن فَرِهَت عِقبانُها وَنُسورُها
Indeed—even the fiercest birds may flutter once,
though their eagles and vultures be vigorous.
