The daughter of fortune sits with us clinging

Her necklace to hearts that wildly yearn

And reveals what her fervent love conceals

My soul drowning in pouring tears

My tears flowed like water, so I stemmed their tide

With soft palm-tips gently pressed to eyes

And returned love's greetings from her eyes

With a waking glance in a dreamer's reverie

I am the son of Abi Salma, my grandsire an oppressor

And my mother a mare stolen by foreigners

Am I not a lad of the noblest stock

With talismans tied and fortune's beams

If all men were of common birth

And I came with my grandsire an oppressor and son of an oppressor

The people's necks would bow low to us

Prostrate at our feet and kissing the earth
