يَقولونَ أَبناءُ البَعيرِ وَمالَهُ
سَنامٌ وَلا في ذِروَةِ المَجدِ غارِبُ
They say the sons of camels and wealth,
Have a hump, but not at the peak of glory a rising star.
أَظَنَّت سَفاهاً مِن سَفاهَةِ رَأيِها
أَن أَهجُوَها لَمّا حَجَتني مُحارِبُ
She foolishly thought in her foolish opinion,
That I would satirize her when she antagonized me as an adversary.
مَعاذَ إِلَهيَ إِنَّني بِعَشيرَتي
وَنَفسِيَ عَن ذاكَ المَقامِ لَراغِبُ
God forbid that I, my clan,
And my soul, shun that high rank.
