أَلا يا لِقَومي لِلفُؤادِ المُرَوَّعِ
وحَبلِ الصِّبا المَوصولِ غَيرِ المُقَطَّعِ
Oh my people, for the frightened heart,
And the rope of youth not yet cut,
وَذِكرى حَبيبٍ لا تُواتيكَ دارُهُ
مَدى الدَّهرِ إِلّا أَن يُرى عِندَ مَهجَعِ
And the memory of a beloved whose abode
Will not come to you forever except at the grave,
أَقولُ لِرُكبٍ قافِلينَ رَأَيتُهُم
بِبِئرِ سَليمٍ مِن صُرادٍ وَأَشجَعِ
I say to a caravan I saw them
At the well of Salim, steadfast and brave,
أَلا إِن بَلَغتُم سالِمينَ فَأَبلِغوا
تَحيَّةَ مَرميٍّ بِسَهمَينِ موجَعِ
Yes, if you reach Salim safely, convey
Mariam's greetings with two painful arrows,
حَمَلتُ الهَوى وَالرَّحلَ فَوقَ شِمِلَّةٍ
جُماليَةٍ هَوجاءَ كالفَحلِ دَيسَعِ
I carried passion and travel gear atop a camel
Beautiful, restless like a mighty stallion
