1. هاجَ البُكاءُ وَعافَ مِنهُ صُدوحَ

    خَطباءُ باكِيَةٍ عَلى التَفراحِ

    Sorrow wails and abstains from joy,

    Weeping orators over happiness.

  2. تَدعو هَديلاً في ذُرا عُبريَّةٍ

    عَيناءَ لَيسَ عُيونُها بِصَواحِ

    They call out softly through teary sighs,

    Eyed ones whose eyes make no sound.

  3. ناحَت بِما عَلِمَت وَلَستُ بِنائِحٍ

    وَأَبَت عَلى دَأبِ الدَلالِ بِصاحِ

    They mourn what they know, while I do not mourn,

    And refuse the persistence of guides with cries.
