ألا هَلْ دَرى مَنْ باتَ غيرَ مُؤَرَّقِ

بأنَّ جُفوني مُذْ نَأى ليسَ تَلْتقي

Does he not know that I spent the night sleepless

For my eyelids since we parted do not meet

وأنَّ غَرامي مُنْذُ سارَ مُلازِمي

وأنَّ اصْطِباري منذُ بانَ مُطَلِّقي

And that my love since he left keeps company with me

And that my patience since he appeared has taken leave of me

وماساقَ أشْواقي وهاجَ بَلابِلي

سِوى سائِقِ الأظْعانِ يَوْمَ التَّفَرُّقِ

And nothing led my passions and confused my thoughts

But the driver of the camels the day we parted

تَعَشَّقتُ في قَومٍ غِرابٍ فَودَّعوا

فيا لَيْتَني مَيْتٌ ولَمْ أتعشَّقِ

I fell in love with a people, strangers, and they bid farewell

Oh would that I were dead and had not fallen in love

ويا ليتَ عَيْني إذْ رأتهمْ تَعلَّقَتْ

سِواهُمْ ولَوْ بالبارِقِ المُتألّقِ

And would that when my eye saw them it had clung

To other than them, even to the shining lightning
