A valley fed by lovers’ tears;
For one slain on its bank, there is no rescuer.
Its birds answer the moaning back and forth,
Telling you how hearts are torn apart.
O you who walk in beauty as though safe,
Casting glances through that valley:
Beware the eyes of its gazelles;
They have struck even lions as foes.
Eyes there are deadly, and the necks
Are white and languid; the gazelles are assailants.
Some among the gazers are more fortunate, yet those gazelles
With their graceful forms are guarded by spears.
I am a man who has always feared their power,
Yet despite my caution, my heart was stolen.
O tree of the valley, your shade is abundant;
Who will let me make your two side locks my pillow?
