    I swear by my passion for love, and my burning desire

    And my anxiety and my kindling fervor

  4. لو قلتُ لي جُد لي بروحك لم أقف

    فيما أمرت وان شككت فجرِّب

    If you told me, “Seek me out with your soul,” I would not hesitate

    In what you ordered, even if you doubted, then try me

  5. مولاي هل من عطفة تصغي إلى

    قصصي وطول شكايتي وتعتبي

    My Master, is there any compassion in you that listens

    To my tales, and the length of my complaints and reproaches?

  6. قد كنت تلقاني بوجه باسم

    واليوم تلقاني بوجه مقطب

    You used to meet me with a smiling face

    And today you meet me with a frowning face

  7. ما كان لي ذنب إليك سوى الهوى

    فعلام تهجرني إذا لم أذنب

    I had no sin against you except love

    So why do you shun me if I did no wrong?

  8. قل لي بأي وسيلة أولي بها

    إن كنت تبعدني لأجل تقربي

    Tell me by what means I could gain closeness

    If you distance me for the sake of my proximity

  9. وحياة وجهك وهو بدر طالع

    وجمال طرتك التي كالغيهب

    By the life of your face, which is a rising full moon

    And the beauty of your frame, which is like a mirage

  10. وتفور مقلتك التي قد اذعنت

    لكمال بهجتها عيون العتب

    And the bubbling of your eyes, which have surrendered

    To the perfection of their charm, the eyes of coquetry

  11. وبياض مبسمك النقي الواضح

    العذب الشهي اللؤلؤي الأشنب

    And the pure, radiant, sweet, pearly smile

    Of your white lips, so soft and delicate

  12. وبقامة لك كالقضيب ركبت من

    أخطارها في الحب أصعب مركب

    And your figure, slender like a rod, composed

    Of dangerous charms of love, the most difficult ship

  13. لو لم أكن في رتبة أرعى لها ال

    عهد القديم صيانة للمنصب

    If I were not of a station that preserves

    The ancient covenant, guarding my position

  14. لهتكت ستري في هواك ولذِّ لي

    خلع العذار ولج فيك مؤنبي

    I would have rent my veil in passion for you and humbled myself

    Shedding my dignity, plunging into your love blameworthy

  15. قد خانني صبري وضاقت حيلتي

    وتقسمت فكري وعقلي قد سبي

    My patience has betrayed me, and my stratagems are exhausted

    My thoughts are divided, and my reason taken captive

  16. ولقد سمحت بمهجتي وحشاشتي

    وبحالتي ووجاهتي وبمنصبي

    I have indulged my heart and my impassioned fancies

    And my status, dignity and position

  17. حتى خشيت بأن تقول عواذلي

    قد حن هذا الشيخ في ذاك الصبي

    That I fear the censurers will say

    “This old man has become infatuated with that boy”

  18. فانظر إليّ برحمة احيا بها

    وتريح قلبي من غرام متعب

    So look upon me with mercy, and revive me

    And relieve my heart from painful love
