إنّ الذي ولّى ففرٌ بنفسه
للخَوفِ مكشوفٌ بلا سِريالِ
He who flees has abandoned himself
To fear, with no concealment for his soul
تُحدى به القوداءُ وَهوَ يَظنُّها
من رُعبهِ معقُولةٌ بعقالِ
The cravens challenge him, though he thinks them
Frenzied with fear, not reasonable mind
طارت بهِ وكأنّما أوصالُها
ولّت بعَينيها مِنَ الإعجالِ
He fled as if his limbs had taken wings
His eyes turning in terror and haste
ركبَ الشمالَ مولّياً ولقلبِهِ
خفقانُ هاذلةٍ بريحِ شمالِ
He rode northwards, his heart aflutter
With the violent gusts from the north wind.
