1. الحرُّ يَرسُبُ دائماً في ذِلَّةٍ

    فكأنهُ بالمكرمات مُثقَلُ

    The free man always sinks into humiliation

    As if burdened with favors

  2. والوَغدُ يَجُذ بهُ الهوانُ إلى العُلا

    فكأنه تُربٌ تطاهُ الأرجُلُ

    While the villain scales the heights of dishonor

    As if he were miry clay trampled underfoot

  3. لا تَطلُبَنَّ بآلةٍ لك رُتبَةً

    قَلَمُ البَليغِ بغيرِ جَدَّ مِغزَلُ

    Seek no position for yourself through mere words

    For the eloquent writer's pen is useless without sincere effort

  4. سَكَنَ السِّمَاكانِ السماءَ كلاهما

    هذا له رمحٌ وهذا أعزَلُ

    The two fish occupy the sea together

    One armed with a spear, the other barehanded
