كأنَّ الزمان فسا على الأحرار

فالآن لطَّخَهم بِسَلح جارِ

As if time had wronged the free

Now it has stained them with a tyrant's weapon

فكأن قُولَنجَ النَّذالةِ مَسَّه

فاستَفَّ من إهليلَجِ الأدبارِ

As if the vile's daggers had touched them

So the nobles turned their backs and fled
