أقمت إلى أن جاءني الليل راجياً

لقاءك يا سؤلي ويا غاية الأمل

I stood waiting for the night to come to me,

I waited until the night came upon me, still hoping

Hoping for a meeting with you, O my wish and ultimate hope.

To meet you, O my heart's desire and the utmost of my hope.

فأيأسني الاظلامعنك ولم أكن

لأيأس يوماً إن بدا الليل يتصل

The darkness made me despair of you, yet I would

Yet the falling darkness made me despair of you, though never was I

Never despair whenever the night connects.

One to lose hope as the night began to lengthen.

وعندي دليل ليس يكذب خبره

بأمثاله في مشكل الأمر يستدل

And I have evidence whose news does not lie,

And I hold a proof whose tidings never lie,

By which the perplexed matter is inferred.

By the likes of which guidance is sought in perplexing matters:

لأنك لو رمت الزيارة لم يكن

ظلام ودام النور فينا ولم يزل

For if you had intended a visit, there would be

For had you intended to visit, no darkness would have fallen,

No darkness, and the light in us would remain unceasing.

And the light among us would have endured, never to fade away.
