1. أجل هو ريع قد عفته الروامس

    فهل أنت فيه ويب غيرك حابس

    Alas! It is a meadow whose flowers have withered

    Are you in it holding anyone else captive?

  2. لقل له أن تحبس العيس ساعةً

    عليك فتبكيك الرسوم الطوامس

    Tell him that detaining someone even for an hour

    Will make you shed tears of regret

  3. على أربع قد كان دهراً بطوله

    للهوك فيه مريع ومجالس

    For so long it was, in its expanse

    A meadow and a place for fun and frolics

  4. عسى يستجيب الربع إذ أنا سائل

    وهل ترجع اللفظ الطلول الدوارس

    May the meadow respond as I plead

    Will this prolix speech return to conciseness?

  5. فعجت عليه ناقتي وهو سبسب

    سقته وجادته الغمام الرواجس

    So I raced my she-camel there as it trotted gracefully

    I watered and graced it with rainy clouds

  6. وقتل ودمعي ساكب متحدر

    وإنسان عيني في هواميه غامس

    And killed it, while my tears poured forth copiously

    And my eyes focused on the sand dunes

  7. لقد كان عيشي فيك لو دام منقاً

    ولكن أبت ذاك الحظوظ الأباخس

    My life with you would have remained flawless, had it lasted

    But misfortune, so vile, refused that

  8. ليالي من أهواه يمسي كأنه

    من العفر ظبي بالصريمة كانس

    Nights I loved turned into an onager

    Fleeing on the meadows like an ostrich chased away

  9. وإذ مشلنا باقٍ جميع محسد

    ولم تقتطع ذاك الدهور الدهارس

    And when we stay, all envious

    Those times did not spare the preys

  10. فكان جواب الربع إذ أنا سائل

    وهل تفهم القول الربوع الأخارس

    So the meadow responded as I pleaded

    Will these silent spaces understand my words?

  11. كذلك حكم الدهر آب وذاهب

    وفي الدهر أصناف مدوس ودابس

    Such is the way of fate, it comes and goes

    And in it are sorts - downtrodden and vanquished

  12. فعرجت عنه موجع القلب ثاكلاً

    وبين الحشا لذع من الحون ناخس

    So I turned away from it, with an aching heart

    Between the sands, stung by deception so vile

  13. وفي طي مثني الصفيح على الثرى

    للشكل والحسن لابس

    On the ground, in a folded cloak

    Lies one fair of form and feature

  14. غريب صفات الحسن أن تبغ حسنه

    فأمنع معدوم هناك المجانس

    How strange are the qualities of beauty

    That it seeks its own beauty and denies the compatible

  15. إذا حد لم تحو الحدود جهاته

    وإن قيس يوماً ضل فيه المقايبس

    When a limit is not contained by limits

    And a time where all measures go astray

  16. فديناه من ظبي يلوح ضياؤه

    على مثله حقاً أصاب المنافس

    We gifted it from an onager which radiated its light

    To its like, it has truly competed

  17. عجبت لدهر لا يني وهو طالبي

    بثأرٍ ولا ينفك دأباً يمارس

    I wonder at a fate that does not console me

    And ceaselessly continues to seek vengeance

  18. إذا ما اصطرعنا فالتداول بيننا

    عراك فمنهوس هناك وناهس

    When we wrestle, the cycles alternate between us

    A struggle - one vanquished, the other triumphant

  19. فتسع وعشرون أتيحت سهامها

    لرأسي فغضت منه فالرأس هارس

    Twenty nine arrows were let loose at my head

    Making it bleed - yet my head remained defiant

  20. كأن بياض الرأس ينفي سواده

    صباح تعرى عنه ليل عكامس

    As if the whiteness of my head negates its blackness

    A dawn that strips away the dark, starless nights

  21. فأهلاً بوفد الشيب إذ جاء وافداً

    وكنت وقلبي قبل ذا منه واجس

    So welcome to the delegation of old age, as it came as a visitor

    When I and my heart were apprehensive of it before

  22. ولما أتى ردت نفوس بغيظها

    ولم تنبسط نحوي اللحاظ النواعس

    And when it came, souls turned away in anger

    No gentle glances welcomed it

  23. ولم أر مثل الشيب أوفى وفيةً

    ليذعره بازي النهار المؤانس

    I have not seen loyalty like old age

    To frighten it, the rays of daybreak, so delightful

  24. وكنا نجوماً طالعاتٍ مضيئةً

    تنير بأدناها الخطوب الخنادس

    We were shining rising stars

    That illuminated the occultations of trials

  25. لقد كان لي في بعض ذلك واعظ

    وما اختلستنيه الصروف الخوالس

    I had a preacher guide me in some of that

    Those times did not trick me like crafty thieves

  26. تناءين عني كالغصون وأعرضت

    ضواحك أقمارٍ وهن عوابس

    They turned away from me like branches

    And laughed like crescent moons, yet were frowning

  27. وقد طالما ارتاحت وهزت غصونها

    بقربي أحقاف الرمال الأواعس

    And they had long rested and shook their branches near me

    The sandy dunes of scorching heat

  28. ظباء إذا قيس الظباء بحسنها

    فإن يعافير الظباء خنافس

    Compared to their beauty, onagers are but insects

    Amongst onagers they are mere flies

  29. زمان يسود المرء فيه محقد

    ولا كزمانٍ ساد فيه الفلافس

    A time that blackens a person

    And not like a time where chivalry prevailed

  30. زعيمون أن يقضي لنا دون غيرنا

    إذا ازدحمت عند الملوك القلانس

    They think to judge for us alone

    When the thrones are crowded with pretentious imposters

  31. سمونا فما في دهرنا غير حاسد

    وطلنا فلم ندرك فما ثم نابس

    They named us, yet our time has none but envious people

    We sought, but did not attain, for there is nothing left

  32. إذا ما تراميني مفاخر معشر

    فأيسر فخري للمفاخر هارس

    When my tribe boasts to me of glories

    My proudest glory is the one that defeats all glories

  33. وإني بعرضي دون ديني متقٍ

    وإني بعرضي دون روحي متارس

    My honor is intact without my faith

    And my honor is intact without my soul

  34. سما بي ساسان ودارا وبعدهم

    قريش العلى أعياصها والعنابس

    Sassanids and Byzantines named me

    And Quraish, its honorable chiefs and masters

  35. فما أخرت حرب مراتب سؤددي

    ولا قعدت بي عن ذرى المجد فارس

    I never slowed down the battles for supremacy

    Nor stayed behind the path of glory and war

  36. هنالك مجد الدهر طالت فروعه

    فهن مواضٍ صعد لا نواكس

    There, the eternal glory has branches spread wide

    They are resting places, none can surpass

  37. ملكنا ملوك الأرض في كل جانب

    فحد مناوينا الحدود الأواكس

    We ruled the kings of earth in every side

    Our domain marked by endmost frontiers

  38. إذا شبت الحرب العوان فبأسنا

    لكل منيع النيل في الناس فراس

    When battles intensified, our might

    Could pierce every impenetrable defense known to men

  39. أباحوا بيوت النار كل ذخيرةٍ

    حمتها شياطين الردى والأبالس

    They violated the homes of fire and every reserve

    Protected by the devils of evil and demons

  40. فلما أتى الإسلام بالحق والهدى

    أقروا لنورٍ خولته الأحامس

    But when Islam came with truth and guidance

    They surrendered to the light it brought forth from darkness

  41. فشدت عرى الإسلام فيهم وعطلت

    بأسيافهم للمشاركين مدارس

    I strengthened the bonds of Islam among them

    And with their swords, destroyed schools for the associators

  42. وأعلن دين اللَه في الأرض بأسهم

    وذلت بهم للمسلمين الكنائس

    And declared Allah's religion across the earth with their might

    And humiliated churches for Muslims with them

  43. فسائل بسلمانٍ وبالحسن الرضى

    وزارا وفيروز هداة أشاوس
