بخمر التجني ما يزال يعربد

A scene filled with captivating meaning does not sleep

A yearning, tormented lover, sleepless and ever watchful,

Roaring with the wine of passion, it does not stop raging

Intoxicated by the wine of capricious cruelty, unruly and quarrelsome.

ففي ساعة يبدي إليك عجائباً

يمر ويستحلي ويدني ويبعد

In an hour it shows you wonders

In a single hour he reveals before you wonders:

It passes by, becomes beautiful, comes near and goes far

Turning bitter, growing sweet, drawing near, and pushing away,

كأن النوى والعتب والبحر والرضى

قران وأندادٌ ونحس واسعد

As if fate, blame, sea, and acceptance

As though separation, reproach, the vast expanse, and favor

Were soulmates, counterparts, ill luck, and great fortune

Were celestial conjunctions and rivals, ill omens and auspicious stars.

رثى لغرامي بعد طول تمنع

وأصبحت محسوداً وقد كنت أحسد

She pitied my love after long aloofness

He took pity on my passion after long resistance,

And I became envied when once I was the envious one

And I became the envied one, having once been the envier.

نعمنا على نور من الروض زاهر

سقته الغوادي فهو يثني ويحمد

We were blessed with light from a blooming garden

We took our delight amidst the radiant blossoms of the garden,

Watered by valleys, so it praises and extols

Watered by the morning clouds, offering ceaseless praise and gratitude,

كأن الحيا والمزن والروض عاطراً

ودموع وأجفانٌ وخدٌ مورد

As if snakes, beauty, and the fragrant garden

As though the rain, the cloud, and the fragrant meadow

Were tears, eyelids, and a reddened cheek

Were falling tears, shedding eyelids, and a blushing cheek.
