كانت إلى دهري لي حاجةٌ

مقرونةٌ في البعد بالمشتري

I had a desire for so long

I had a longing that I sought from Fate,

Coupled with distance like a buyer

As far away as Jupiter in the distant heavens;

فساقها باللطف حتى إذا

كانت من القرب على محجر

He led it gently until when

Yet Fate gently guided it near, until

It came near at hand

It drew as close as the edge of the eye,

أبعدها عني فعادت كأن

لم تبد للعين ولم تظهر

He sent it away from me, so it was as though

Then cast it far from me, returning as though

It did not appear to the eye nor emerge

It had never appeared to the eye, nor ever been seen.
