Peace be upon the house we left behind
Peace be upon an abode that we departed, left behind,
Empty of people, lonely and barren
Devoid of its people, desolate and barren.
As if it never echoed with joy just yesterday
You see it as a wasteland, as though it had not flourished only yesterday,
Or was inhabited by people before us
Nor had been inhabited by its folk for an era before us.
O house, we did not abandon you by choice
O home, it was never our choice to leave you deserted,
If we could, you would be our grave
And had we possessed the power, you would have been our grave.
But it was the decree of Allah
Yet divine decrees were irrevocably carried out,
That demolished us, willingly or not
Subduing us, willingly or by force, to whatever befell.
O best house, you remained virtuous
O best of abodes, you were left behind praised and cherished;
The valleys quenched you, through good times and bad
May the morning rainclouds water you, however momentous and bitter our fate!
O you who hosted those gardens, protect them
O beholder of those gardens that were once encircled
Gardens of ponds, now turned to dust after us
By crystalline meadows, which after us have turned to dust!
O fate, convey my greetings
O Time, convey my greetings to its former dwellers,
To those who live there, be they near or far
Even if they now abide in the two Marws or have crossed the River.
Have patience with the tyranny of fate over them
So patience in the face of Time's assault and its judgment upon them,
Though the taste of patience is bitter
Even if the taste of patience is burdensome and bitter.
If our thirst was long, so was our drink
For if it has made us thirst, how long it once quenched our thirst,
And if our time there was bad, so was our joy
And if it grieved us there, how long it once made life easy.
O beloved house, may the soft rain
And O beloved abode, may the dark, pouring raincloud
Not stop watering your open plains
Never depart from your grounds, showering them with rain!
As if no lovers ever lived in you
As though you were never inhabited by tender, charming maidens,
Or virtuous men who shone like bright stars
And noble, proud men who shone like radiant stars.
They perished and vanished, yet their traces remain
They perished, passed away, and their distance became permanent;
For the like of them, my tears flow
For the likes of them, my tear-filled eyes have poured out their grief.
We will endure hardship after ease with obedience
We shall patiently endure hardship after ease in humble submission,
Hoping ease will follow our patience
In hope that noble patience will be followed by ease.
If we returned to those days, how would it be
Yet even if that era returned and we returned to its embrace,
For those who inhabit the grave?
What of those among its people who now dwell in the grave?
O our fate there, when will you return?
O bygone time we spent there, when will you ever return,
So we thank you whether you give or prevent
So that we might praise your homecoming and renewed embrace, if you return?
O Lord, grant us a day in it, or a night
For O, how many a day within its halls, and how many a night,
Reunited under the sun or moonlight
Where we joined the sun to the full moon with joyful revelry!
Soothe my sorrow, tempt my desire
Alas for my exhausted body! Alas for my tormented heart!
Console my grief, relieve my burning inside
Alas for my bereaved soul! Alas for my burning spirit!
O anguish, how severe! O yearning, how sincere!
O grief, how contagious you are! O sorrow, how sharply you pierce!
O rapture, how intense! O separation, how cruel!
O longing, how painful you are! O separation, how cruel and cold!
O fate, do not depart! O era, do not end!
O Time, do not estrange them further! O sacred bond, do not dissolve!
O tears, do not dry! O illness, do not heal!
O tears, do not freeze dry! O sickness of love, do not heal!
I will lament that time as long as greens grow
I shall mourn that bygone era as long as the green sky stands
And roofs shelter people while dust covers me
As a ceiling over mankind, and the dusty earth bears us upon it.
