1. ألم يخاليني جلاء مجرب

    على أنه حقاً بي العالم الطب

    Did not a daring adventurer mislead me

    That he was truly in the learned world an adept

  2. أعيذك إن ترتاب في أني الذي

    أتى سابقاً والكل ينحر أو يحبو

    I implore you, do not doubt that I

    Am he who came before while all slay or crawl

  3. أمثلك يعشو عن مكاني ويمتري

    بأني من أفلاك ذا الأدب القطب

    Do you live forgetting where I stand astray

    That I am of the stars of this polar literature

  4. أيخفني عليك البرد ليلة تمه

    ولم يستتر عنك النيازك والشهب

    Does the cold of night which exposed you

    To meteors and shooting stars conceal me from you

  5. وحاشاي أن يمتد زهو بمنطق

    وأن يستفز الحلم من تولي العجب

    Far be it that vainglory stretches my reason

    Or that fancy tempts me to embrace conceit

  6. ولكن لي في يوسف خير أسوة

    وليس على من بالنبي انتسى ذنب

    But I find in Joseph a great example

    No sin upon one who in the prophet took comfort

  7. يقول وقال الحق والصدق أنني

    حفيظ عليم ما على صادق عتب

    I say and truth and honesty said that I

    Am a vigilant knowledgeable, no reproach on the sincere

  8. فلو كُسِيَ الفولاذ حدة خاطري

    تساوى لديه اللحم والحجر الصلب

    If my fervent temper were clad in steel

    Flesh and solid rock would be to it equal

  9. ولو كان للنيران بعض ذكائه

    وفاض عليها لجة البحر لم يخب

    If fire had some of its wit

    And overflowed on it the sea's spleen it would not wane

  10. وما اختص علم دون علم بوجهتي

    بل مسرحي في كلها الواسع الخصب

    No knowledge was restricted from my domain

    Rather my stage in all is fertile and abundant

  11. وما لي عميمٌ لست أخشى نفاده

    بإنفاقه لا بل يزيد وينصب

    I have no finite pool of which I fear depletion

    By spending it no, but it increases and ascends

  12. سموت بنفسي لا بمجد هوت به

    من الزمن الغدار آلاته الحدب

    I rose by my soul not by the glory which

    From fickle time its bending means ensnared

  13. وأن شئت أخبار الدهور فإنني

    أنا جامع التاريخ مذ نبت الهضب

    If you wish the chronicles of ages, I

    Am the collector of history since hills arose

  14. يسافر علمي حيث سافرت ظاعناً

    ويصحبني حيث استقلت بي النجب

    My knowledge travels where roaming I voyaged

    And accompanies me where steeds carried me aloft

  15. أنا الشمس في جو العلوم منيرةً

    ولكنّ عيبي أنّ مطلعِيَ الغرب

    I am the sun in the atmosphere of knowledge radiant

    Yet my flaw is my rise is the west

  16. ولو أنني من جانب الشرق طالعُ

    لجدُ على ما ضاع من ذكري النهب

    If I rose from the orient side

    I would find what was lost of my ravaged fame

  17. ولي نحو أكناف العراق صبابةٌ

    ولا غرو أن يستوحش الكلف الصب

    Towards Iraq's edges I have an affection

    Small wonder that the barren sands feel lonely

  18. فإن ينزل الرحمن رحلي بينهم

    فحينئذ يبدو التأسف والكزب

    If the Merciful descends my trip among them

    Then sorrow and dryness will appear

  19. فكم قائل أغفلته وهو حاضر

    وأطلب ما عنه تجيء به الكتب

    How many have I neglected though present

    Seeking what of them books may relate

  20. هنالك يدري أن للعبد قصة

    وإن كساد العلم آفته القرب

    There he will know the servant has a tale

    And the proximity of knowledge is its detriment

  21. فيا عجباً من غاب عنهم تشوقوا

    له ودنؤ المرء من دراهم ذنب

    What wonder that they yearned when absent

    While man is familiarised with his sin's coins

  22. وأنت مكاناً ضاق عني لضيقٌ

    على أنه فيحٌ مهامهه سهب

    You are a place too narrow for me by the constraint

    That it is an abyss whose ambition is a mirage

  23. وإن رجالاً ضيعوني لضيعٌ

    وإن زماناً لم أنل خصبه جدب

    If men lost me it is for I was lost

    If an era whose fertility I missed was barren
