خليليَّ هلْ أبصَرْتُما عاشِقاً مثلِي

يحِنُّ كَما حنَّ الغريبُ إلى الأهْلِ

My friends, have you ever seen a lover like me

Who yearns as a stranger longs for home?

خليليَّ كُفّا عن مَلامةِ هائِمٍ

مسامِعُهُ لم تصْغِ يوماً إلى العذْلِ

My friends, cease blaming a infatuated one,

Whose ears never listen to rebuke.

ألَمْ تَعْلَما أنّي تملّكَني الهَوى

فوَاللهِ ما أَمْسَى بغيْرِ الهَوى شُغْلي

Don't you know that passion has possessed me,

By God, I have no other concern but love!

كلِفْتُ بظَبْيٍ ساحِرِ الجَفْنِ لم يزَلْ

يَصولُ علَى أكْبادِنا منهُ بالنّبْلِ

I am enslaved by a gazelle with bewitching eyes,

Who ceaselessly wounds our hearts with arrows.

وما السّحْرُ عن هاروتَ يُرْوَى حقيقةً

ولكنّهُ يُرْوَى عنِ الأعْيُنِ النّجْلِ

Magic is not really learned from Harut,

Rather, it is learned from alluring eyes.

فكَمْ ذا تَلوماني على كلَفي به

كأن لم يذُقْ طعْمَ الهَوى عاشِقٌ قبْلي

Why then do you blame me for my devotion to him

As if no lover had tasted passion before me?

سَقى عهْدَ مَنْ أهْواهُ عهْدُ مَدامِعٍ

فكَثرتُها تُغْنيهِ عنْ صيِّبِ الوَبْلِ

I made a pact with the one I love, a pact of tears,

So they became plentiful, making streams overflow.

وإنّ جفوني كلّما بخِلَ الحَيا

تُحَيّي بوكّافٍ من الدّمْعِ منْهَلِّ

Whenever my eyelids grow stingy with life,

They revive with showers of tears like springs.

أنادي علَى حُكْمِ الصّبابةِ في الدُجا

ترفَّقْ عَسى بعْدَ القطيعةِ من وصْلِ

I call upon the rule of youths in darkness:

"Have mercy, perhaps after separation comes union!"

ألا عَطْفَةٌ بعدَ التّباعُدِ والنّوى

ألا عِدَةٌ بالوَصْلِ يوماً بلا مَطْلِ

Is there no kindness after estrangement and turning away?

Is there no returning after separation without end?

إذا لم تكُنْ لي أنتَ عَوْناً على الذي

أُقاسِيه من حُبي ووجْدي فقُلْ مَنْ لي

If you will not help me endure

What I suffer from my love and passion, say who will?
