1. قَلبي كلِفٌ بظبْيةٍ حَسْناءِ

    يأتي وصْفُها بالرّوضةِ الغنّاءِ

    My heart is burdened with love for a beautiful gazelle

    Whose description is that of a melodious garden

  2. كمْ قد أطْلَعَتْ من غُرّةٍ غَرّاءِ

    يلْتاحُ جَمالُها لعَيْنِ الرّائي

    How often has she glanced with bright black eyes

    Her beauty is apparent to the beholder

  3. يا مَن لجُفونِ دمعِها ينسَكِبُ

    ومَن لضُلوعٍ جمْرُها يلْتَهِبُ

    O you whose eyelids shed flowing tears

    And whose ardour sets alight the ribs

  4. عُذّالي إذْ بُحْتُ بوَجْدي عتَبوا

    والشّمسُ عَنِ العُيونِ لا تحْتَجِبُ

    My critics blamed me when I complained of passion

    Though the sun does not veil itself from eyes

  5. جِسمي خافٍ والقلْبُ وجْداً خافِتْ

    لعَهْدِ وصالٍ قدْ تقضّى فائِتْ

    My body is empty and my heart faint

    From the loss of a union now passed

  6. يا لَيْتَ أُرَى في الحُسْنِ يوماً باهِتْ

    ممّنْ حُسْنُها يُعْجِزُ وصْفَ النّاعِتْ

    Would that I could one day see her beauty wane

    She whose beauty defeats all attempts at description

  7. ما كُنتُ أُطيقُ عنْ حِماها لُبْثا

    حتّى ألْقِي الرّكابَ فيه حثّا

    I could not bear estrangement from her protection

    Until I hurried to her on foot

  8. لوْلا أنْ جادَ لي النّوالُ غَيْثا

    ممّنْ تُلْفِيه في التّلاقِي لَيْثا

    Had the cup of gifts not been generous to me

    With one who fiercely embraces at meetings

  9. من غيثِ النّدى جُوداً وغوثِ الرّاجي

    ومُسْعِفِ قَصْدِ الآمِلِ المُحْتاجِ

    A raincloud of dew in his munificence and a savior of the hopeful and needy

    Dispelling gloom with his blazing light

  10. ومُجْلي الدُّجى بنُورِه الوهّاجِ

    ومَوْلَى مُلوكِها أبي الحجّاجِ

    The protector of his kingdom's kings, my lord Al-Hajjaj

    He appears to eyes like the dawning morn

  11. مَرآهُ يَلوحُ للعُيونِ صُبْحا

    ثَناه كأزهارِ الرّياضِ نفْحا

    His charm like the flowers of gardens in their scent

    The doves of my thoughts echoed his renown

  12. حَمائِمُ فِكْري ردّدتهُ صَدْحا

    غَواني الطُّروسِ قلّدَتْهُ وُشْحا

    My passion adorned him with necklaces and pendants

    The champions of the faith - his elevation is a spearhead

  13. أنصارَ الدّين لعُلاهُ سِنْخُ

    عِقْبانُ وَغىً يومَ التّلاقي فُتْخُ

    Hawks of war on the day of battle a piercing blade

    His right hand is open when seekers implore

  14. ويُمْناهُ إذ للقاصدينَ يَسْخُو

    شَريعةُ جُودٍ لمْ يرُعْها النّسْخُ

    A law of munificence that abrogation has not erased

    This - but my heart is stricken by distance

  15. هذا لكِنْ جَفا فُؤادي البُعْدُ

    فليْسَ بهِ إلا جوىً أو وجْدُ

    Its only relief lament or passion

    Will a day fulfill its promise of reunion

  16. أيُنْجزُ يوْماً للتلاقِي وَعْدُ

    ويُغْمَرُ غوْرٌ للرّضا أو نَجْدُ

    And immerse me in the rapture of joy or passion?

    My heart shot an arrow into separation

  17. رَمى قَلْبي للبَيْنِ سهْمٌ مُنْفذُ

    فالوَجْدُ على جَميعهِ مُسْتَحوذُ

    And passion has taken hold over all of it

    None can deliver it but the union

  18. فليس لهُ غيرُ الوصالِ مُنقِذُ

    ولا سِوى مَوْلى الوَرى تعوُّذُ

    And none grant refuge but the Lord of mankind

    He surpasses all others in sight or report

  19. قد فاقَ الوَرى في منظَرٍ أو مَخْبَرِ

    موْلىً هدْيُهُ يَروقُ عيْنَ المُبْصِرِ

    A master whose guidance delights the perceiving eye

    His beauty shines like the dawning day

  20. يَلوحُ سَناهُ كالصّباحِ المُسْفِرِ

    فتَخفى نجومُ الأفْقِ حوْلَ المظْهَرِ

    The stars around disappear at his appearance

    He makes all past and future insignificant

  21. أنسَى مَن مَضى وكُلّ آتٍ أعْجَزا

    وعْداً ووعيداً مُخْلِفاً أو مُنْجِزا

    Promises kept or broken, fulfilled or pending

    He remains secured in attaining perfection

  22. ما زالَ لأوْصافِ الكمالِ مُحْرِزاً

    ومِنْ رِفْدِه لكُلِّ مُحْسِنٍ جَزا

    And from his overflowing grace rewards every benefactor

    A master who contends with time and adversity

  23. موْلىً كالدّهْرِ بالأعادِي قدْ سَطا

    أضْحى مُنْعِماً بالعَدْلِ فينا مُقسِطا

    Becoming just, establishing equity among us

    Bestowing clouds of gifts on those who seek them

  24. يُفيضُ على قصّادِه سُحْبَ العَطا

    فتُلْفيهِمْ ورْداً كأسْرابِ القَطا

    Enveloping them in throngs of kindness

    However you glance at me, in letter or speech

  25. مهْما نظَرتْ عينُك لي باللّحْظِ

    أو فاتحْتَني بالكَتْبِ أو باللّفْظِ

    Your every look or word confers blessing and fortune

    To gain the choicest portion in this life

  26. فكَم حُظْوةٍ تُفيدُها أو لحْظِ

    للفَوْز منَ الدّنيا بأوفَى حَظِّ

    O Joseph in beauty or in sovereignty!

    My composition is a limpid, harmonious string

  27. أيا يُوسُفاً في الحسْنِ أو في المُلْكِ

    نظامِي كَدُرٍّ رائِقٍ في السّلْكِ

    I remove by it the bitterness of misfortune

    When you said “My servant, al-Husayn, you are my possession!”

  28. أزيلُ به صرْفَ الخُطوبِ الحُلْكِ

    إذ قلتَ أبو الحسَينِ عَبْدي مِلْكي

    I am your slave, O Imam of Justice

    O Khazrajite in lineage and origin

  29. أنا المَمْلوكُ يا إمامَ العَدْلِ

    ويا خَزْرَجيَّ المُنتَمى والأصْلِ

    O Gatherer of the dew into a whole

    When none in this age are mine but you

  30. ويا جامِعاً ما للنّدى منْ شمْلِ

    إذا لمْ تكُنْ لي في الزمانِ مَن لي

    My tear and passionate heart roam distraught

    Suffused with passion like the waving banners

  31. دمْعي وفؤادِي هائِمٌ أو هامِ

    يهْفو وجْداً كخافِقِ الأعْلامِ

    My eyelids and love are lasting and eternal

    As the sword of Islam’s champion

  32. جَفْني وغَرامي دائِمٌ أو دامِ

    كمِثْلِ حُسامِ ناصرِ الإسلامِ

    My passion - how can counting grasp it?

    How many outstretched hands have I extended to its furthest limit

  33. وجْدي ما أنْ ياخُذْهُ الإمْكانُ

    هلّا يُحْصي شُهْبَ الدُجى حُسْبانُ

    I express it in sighs that surpass all counting

    A meaning that passion wills, explicitly or allusively

  34. والحُبُّ أبانوا عندَ ما قد بانُوا

    فآليْتُ تعودُ بالرِّضى الأزْمانُ

    A gazelle who accepts no contentment but what he dictates

    No purpose but what pleases him

  35. بالقلْبِ من الغَرامِ ما لا يُحْصى

    فكَمْ أمَدٍ بلغْتُ منهُ الأقصى

    The sword of patience - whenever I unsheathe it

    Passion fells whatever resolve wields it

  36. أُبْديه جَوىً يكلُّ عنهُ الإحْصا

    معْنىً كيفَ شاءهُ الهَوى أو نصّا

    Would that bygone days might return

    And intimacy be restored to wholeness

  37. ظَبْيٌ لا رِضىً إلا بما يقْضيهِ

    ولا قصْدَ إلا الذي يُرْضيهِ

    I hoped - but does love acknowledge hope?

    Or after it does sorrow avail or benefit?

  38. للصّبْرِ حُسامٌ كلّما أُنضيهِ

    يفُلُّ الهَوى ما عزْمُهُ يُمْضيهِ

    This is my heart, youthful toward him, intent

    Passion in me has reached its zenith

  39. يا لَيْتَ زَماناً قد مضى يرْتَجِعُ

    والأُنْسُ لهُ شمْلٌ به مُجْتَمِعُ

    This is my ambition - if he should attain what he desires

    Then my tears are copious and my ardour overflowing

  40. طمِعْتُ وهلْ في الحُبِّ يُجْدي الطمعُ

    أو يُغْني الأسَى منْ بعدِه أو ينفَعُ

    She drew it deftly with fingers white as camomile

    From the palm of the Imam of West and al-Andalus

  41. هذا قَلْبي صَبا إليْهِ وصَغا

    لقد بلغَ الغرامُ منّي مَبْلَغا

    Revealing the light of dawn to the illuminator

    The lion of saddle-bags and the full moon of majlis

  42. هذا طمَعي لو نالِ منْهُ ما ابْتغَى

    فالدّمعُ طَما وجمْرُ وجْدي قد طَغا

    The guidance of his hand disperses the wings of night when it descends

    His palm is hoped for protection and dreaded in war

  43. جادَتْ فحَكتْ صوْبَ الحَيا المُنْبَجِسِ

    من كَفِّ إمامِ الغَرْبِ والأندَلُسِ

    It wearied Jarir and al-A’sha in description

    So how can verse match it or approach it?

  44. يُبْدي نورَ الصّباحِ للمُقْتَبِسِ

    يبْدو أسَدَ السّرْجِ وبدْرَ المجْلِسِ

    Take it as the meadow’s adab in its irrigation

    He brought it life with rainclouds of munificence when he revived it

  45. يجلو هَدْيُهُ جِنْحَ الدُجى إذ يَغْشى

    تُرْجى كفُّهُ سَلْماً وحرْباً تُخْشى

    A composition that ennobled a servant through his Master

    With excellent work that Allah gifted him

  46. قد أعْيا جَريراً وصْفُهُ والأعْشى

    فكيفَ يَفي نظْمٌ به أو إنْشا

    For him the caravan is challenged and the deserts traversed

    The chronicles of his gifts are recited from his right hand

  47. خُذْهُ أدَباً كالرّوْضِ في ريّاهُ

    أحْياهُ بغَيْثِ الجودِ إذ حيّاهُ

    By the bounty of his hands every thirst is quenched

    He utters his praise in secret or softly breathed

  48. نظْماً شرّفَ العَبْدَ بهِ مَوْلاهُ

    بالصُّنْعِ الجَميلِ قد حَباهُ اللهُ

    A master of consummate character and perfecter of bounty

    Made clear by the complete man of dew

  49. لهُ الرّكْبُ يُحْدَى والفَيافي تُطْوى

    عنْ يُمْناهُ أخبارُ العَطايا تُرْوى

    By it his servant attained hopes

    Nobility profits from his glance and wealth

  50. من جَدْوى يديهِ كُلُّ ظامٍ يَرْوَى

    يُلْقي حَمدَهُ في السِّرِّ أو في النّجْوَى

    My Master who guides creation with guidance

    One whose attributes all creation wearied in describing

  51. مَوْلىً بالجميلِ يَشفَعُ الإجْمالا

    ويوضِحُ منْ كافي النّدى الإكْمالا

    When you attained the most exalted rank of perfection

    Your servant attained what he hoped for in this life

  52. بهِ عبْدُهُ قد بلغَ الآمالا

    فالجاه يُفيدُ لحْظُهُ والمالا

  53. موْلايَ الذي يُهْدي الوُجودَ الهَدْيا

    ومَنْ وصْفُهُ كُلَّ الوَرى قد أعْيا

  54. لمّا نِلتَ رُتْبةَ الكَمالِ العُلْيا

    نالَ العَبْدُ ما أمّلَهُ في الدُنْيا
