أزمَعَ الصّومُ مُؤذِناً بارتِحالِ

بَعدَما رَدني بأسوأ حال

Fasting has announced its departure

After it left me in the worst state

وَحَلَى لي فيهِ التنسُّكُ حتى

صِرْتُ فيهِ للسُّقمِ مثلَ الخلالِ

And abstinence became sweet for me until

I became in it like a peeled orange

ما أظنِّي أرى الهلال إلى أنْ

تَنظروني منَ الضّنى كالهلال

I don't think I'll see the crescent until

You see me out of misery like the crescent

يا نَديميَّ في العبادَةِ مَهْلاً

ما بقي فيهِ غيرُ هذي الليّالي

O my drinking companion, take it easy with worship

For only these nights remain

يُؤجرُ المرءُ مِثلَما قيلَ كُرهاً

فأمرِ النّفسَ فيهِ بالاحتمالِ

One is rewarded the same for doing it reluctantly

So command the self in it with endurance

هَذهِ هذِهِ اللياليْ التي لو

دَفَعَتني وَقَعْتُ في شَوَّال

These are those nights that if

They pushed me away, I'd fall into Shawwal

إنْ تناسَيْتُما الحبيب لِبُعْدٍ

فاذكروا اليومَ قُربَ طيبِ الوصال

If you both forget the beloved due to distance

Remember the day, the nearness of the good union

فَسَيغدو السّحورُ بَعْدُ صبوحاً

وَتُدارُ الشّمولُ بالأرطال

For dawn will soon become morning

And kegs will be tapped

نَظّفَتْ كلُّ غادةِ طرقَ ال

فَلا تَقْلَقوا ل الحلالِ

Every beauty cleared the roads of

So don't worry, stick to what's lawful

وكأنّ وَقَدْ دُفِعنا إلى الحا

ن بَرِهطٍ في اللّهْوِ من أشكالي

As if we were handed over to the guard

A company of clowns and fantasizers

ذا يُغَنْي وذا يُبَشْلِقُ بالكفِّ

وهذا في بابةٍ وَخيالِ

This one sings and that one gestures with his palm

And that one is in wonderment and imagination

فإذا ما سطت عَلَيْهمْ يدُ القه

وةِ ثارَ الجميعُ للأختِلالِ

So when the hand of power falls upon them

They all rise in turbulence

فترى ذا في وجه هذا

لثَ وهذا يَصيحُ ستّي تعالي

You see this one hitting that one

And this one yelling come help me

آخِ أختِ مَنْ يقيسُك بالْظب

يِ وذا ال في أمِّ الغزال

Alas! Who compares you to a gazelle

And that to the mother of the gazelle

بوهُ أحّاهُ ياسويدي تَرَفّقْ

قد من

Wow! Wow! Take it easy my friend

I have a family and kids

وَينادي هذا وَحَقِّ عَليَّ

العلقُ في البزالِ

And this one yells, by my right

The jug bit me in the crotch

طاقُ طرطاقُ الحقوه أمسكوهُ

أحملونا جميعنا للوالي

Smash smash... Catch him... Hold him

Take all of us to the governor

اتركوا عنكُمُ الخصامَ وَطيبوا

هلْ جُمعْتُم للقَصْفِ أو للقتالِ

Leave off this fighting and be good

Were you gathered for gossip or combat?

أيش هَذي الفعالُ لا كانَ ذا العَيْ

شُ وأُفّ لعِشْرَةِ الأنذالِ

What is this behavior, as if this life

Was made for the likes of rogues

يا مديرَ الكؤوسِ حثَّ الأباري

قَ علينا مَلأَى من الجريال

O server of cups, hurry the cups to us

Filled up from the jar

أوْ تَرانا من سُكرِنا لم نُفَرِّقْ

بينَ طُرْقِ الهدى وَطُرق الضلالِ

Or do you see us so drunk we can't

Distinguish the paths of truth and misguidance?

يا نَديميِّ لا تخافا إذا أكثر

تُما شُربَها منَ الإعلالِ

O my drinking companion, do not worry if

You drink a lot and sin

أتخافانِ عشرةً في زمان

فيه شمسُ الضحى وبدرُ الليالي

Do you fear the company of an era

In which is the sun of dawn and the moon of nights?
