1. لم يَبْقَ عِندِيَ ما يُباعُ فَيُشترَى

    إلا حَصيرٌ قَدْ تَساوى بالثّرَى

    I have nothing left to sell or buy

    Except a mat now equal to the ground

  2. وَبَقيّةُ النّطعِ الذي وَلِعَتْ بهِ

    أيدي البِلى حتى تَمَزَّقَ وانبَرى

    And tatters that eager hands destroyed

    Till naught remained but shreds unstrung

  3. نَطْعٌ تُرٍيقُ دَمي عَلَيهِ بَقّةٌ

    حتّى تَراهُ وهو أسودُ أحمرا

    Tatters that soak my blood but retain

    A remnant making them seem red and black

  4. في منزلٍ كالقَبرِ كَمْ قَدْ شاهَدَتْ

    فيه نَكيراً مُقلتاي وَمُنكرا

    In a home like a tomb, how it witnessed

    Nakir and Munkar reproaching me

  5. لو لم يَكُنْ قبراً لَما أمسيتُ نسِياً

    فيهِ حتى أنّني لم أذكرا

    Had it not been a tomb, I'd forget myself

    Lingering there till I lost all recollection

  6. والقبرُ أهنا مَسكناً إذْ لم أكنْ

    مَعْ ضيقِِ سُكناهُ أُطالبُ بالكرى

    Yet a tomb's a fine home when you lack

    A place, however cramped, to lay your head

  7. لا فَرقَ بينَ ذوي القبورِ وبينَ مَن

    لا رِزقَ يُرزَقُه سوى العيش الخرا

    No difference 'twixt tomb-bound souls and those

    Who live on handouts, never earned bread

  8. أفٍّ لِعُمْرٍ صارَ في رَيَعانهِ

    مثلي يَوَدُّ بأنْ يَموتَ فَيُقْبرا

    Alas for a life that in its prime

    Sees me wish only to die and be interred!

  9. ولَرُبَّ قائلةٍ أما من رحلةٍ

    تُمسي وَقَدْ أعَسرت منها مُوسِرا

    And many a woman says, "No journey but

    Has left me bankrupt after making me rich"

  10. سِر فالهِلالُ كمالُهُ في سَيْرِهِ

    والماءُ أَطيَبُ ما يكونُ إذا جرى

    Move on, for the crescent's beauty is in motion

    And water's sweetest flowing, not still

  11. كم مُدْبرٍ لمّا تحرَّكَ عَدَّهُ

    بعَد السُّكونِ ذوو العقولِ مُدبِّرا

    How often the wise thought stalled men fools

    Till movement made them seem clever instead

  12. فأجبتُها سَيري وَمَكثي واحدٌ

    النّحسُ نَحسٌ مُنجِداً وَمُغَوِّرا

    I told her my stays and journeys are one:

    Misfortune misfortunes wherever you turn

  13. إنَّ المدائِنَ وَهيَ أوسعُ بقعة

    ضاقَتْ عَلَيَّ فكيف أرحَلُ للقرى

    The greatest cities felt too small for me

    So how roam to some narrow village?

  14. تاللهِ قَد أقوى السّماحُ وأصبَحَتْ

    منهُ عِراصُ البِرِّ برَّاً مُقْفِرا

    By God, generosity's grown so rare

    The generous are arid wastes, empty and bare

  15. وَلَقَد سألتُ عنِ الكرامِ فلم أجد

    في الناس عن تلكَ الكرامِ مُخَبِّرا

    I asked after nobles and found none left

    To tell of those nobles, none anywhere

  16. حتّى كنَّ حديثَ كُل أخي نَدَى

    عَن كُلِّ مَنْ يَروي حديثاً مفتَرى

    My friends shun all tales of miracles

    Spread by dissemblers far and wide

  17. إنْ كانَ حقّاً ما يُقالُ فإنّهم

    كانوا وما ولّى الزَّمانُ القهقرى

    If what they say be true, those men

    Are gone, time wheeling back past them

  18. لم يبقَ عندَهُم حَديثٌ طيِّبٌ

    للطّارِقينَ ولا مُناخٌ في الذُّرى

    They left no tales to entrance late guests

    No lodging for them on the face of earth

  19. واليومَ أبناءُ الزَّمانِ أشَحُّهم

    يدعى المُدَبِّرَ والسّخِيُّ مُبَذِّرا

    Today's men call the good man a fool

    The spendthrift called farsighted and wise

  20. منْ كُلِّ مَن قد ساءَ خَلقاً مثلما

    قد ساءَ خُلقاً في النُّهى وَتَصّورا

    Whoever's ill-natured is prized the same

    As the immoral in deed and thought

  21. قَرَنَ الفضيّلةَ بالرَّذيلةِ جاهلاً

    وكفاهُ جَهلاً أنّه لَن يَشْعُرا

    In his ignorance equating vice and virtue

    Never imagining they might differ, not knowing the difference

  22. وَمِنَ المصيبةِ أَنَّ رِزقيَ فيهم

    نَزْر وَرُبّتما غداً متعذِّرا

    Our calamity is their sustenance of us

    Is negligible, uncertain on the morrow

  23. فَلَئِنْ ذَمَمْتُ ذَمَمْتُ مَن لا يَرْعَوي

    ولئن شَكَرتُ شكرتُ من لم يشكرا

    If I blame, I blame those who scorn me

    If thank, thank those who never gave thanks

  24. فلأصبِرَنَّ على الزَّمانِ وإنّني

    لأخو الشّقاءِ صبرتُ أو لنْ أصبِرا

    I'll be patient with time, though it pains me

    I, the bosom friend of misery, patient or not
