1. أما ترى الليل قد ألهبته شمعا

    مثل الكواكب باتت حوله حرسا

    Do you not see the night, which candles have set ablaze—

    like stars, keeping vigil around it as guards?

  2. من كل ناشرة فرعا له شعب

    عند القيام واسبال اذا نكسا

    From each, an unfurled bough with branching shoots,

    upright when it stands, trailing when overturned.

  3. تطغى اذا نهنهوها من سجيتها

    كالماء ان دفعوا في صدره انبجسا

    It grows defiant when they try to curb its native bent,

    like water: if they press against its breast, it surges back.
