No purpose is achieved save by the valiant,

No sword proves sharp save in the grip of heroes.

To him the cooing of a dove upon its perch

Is sweeter than a bawling camel's loud outcry.

The neighing of the steeds that fills his ears

Is lovelier than pipes heard at evening from afar.

O star that sinks drunk sheikhs in sensual joy

While enemies are burned by thy hot rays!

Men fail to gain, strive hard as they may do,

A part of what thou graspest in hasty flight.
