وددتُ بأني ما علوت كما علوا

عليه وإني ما دنوتُ كما دنوا

I wish I had not risen high as they rose

Above him, and I had not drawn near as they drew near,

وعطلت ما عندي بما عندهم وما

حصلتُ على ما حصلوه وما دروا

And I had not been idle with what I have because of what they have,

And I had not obtained what they obtained and knew not.

وانهمُ في كلِّ حالٍ ومشهد

على حكم ما ظنوه فيه وما نووا

And they, in every state and scene,

Are upon the judgment of what they thought in it and intended.

وليتهمُ لو قدَّموه وثابروا

عليه تدلوا في النزول وما علوا

I wish they had put it forward and persevered

Upon it, they would have descended in humility and not risen high.

ولكنهم لما تحققَ جودُهم

وجودهمُ هدُّوا قواعدَ ما بنوا

But when their generosity

And existence were verified, they demolished the foundations of what they built.

وما ذاك إلا أنَّ في الصدق ثلمةً

تخوّنهم فيما رأوه وما رووا

And that is only because in truthfulness there is a flaw

That betrays them in what they saw and related.

وليتهمُ لما تحققَ كونهمُ

لديهم وما اهتموا لذاك وما بلوا

I wish when their existence

With Him was verified, they had not cared for that and been tested.

ولو كان غيرَ الكون كوّن كونَهم

لما اتباع أضدادَ الهوى ولما شروا

And if other than existence had formed their existence,

They would not have followed the opposites of passion and not been evil.

ودادُك مطلوبي وحبك مذهبي

وعشقك صفو العيش هذا إذا صفوا

Your love is my sought, your affection my doctrine,

And your passion the quintessence of life, if quintessence.

وصيتهم حبل الإله تمسكوا

به وتدانوا منهمُ عندما خلوا

And their advice, “Hold fast to God’s cord,

Cling to it” and draw near them when they are alone.
