حسٌّ يفرِّق والرواح تتحد

أنا الفقير وأنت السيد الصمدُ

My passion separates while spirits unite

I am the pauper and You are the Eternal Lord

أنت الذي بجمال الكونِ ينفرد

وأنت أيضاً بذاتِ العين تتحد

You are the One with the beauty of the universe endowed

And You are also the One with the essence united

فليس يبقى لعين الاتحاد بنا

في كوننا كثرة تبدو ولا عدد

So sight of oneness between us does not remain

In our multitude that appears without number

العلم يشهد أنَّ الأمر واحدة

كما أتتك به الآياتُ فاتئدوا

Knowledge testifies that the matter is one

As the verses have brought you so be guided

لو كلف الخلقُ ما عاشوا عبادته

من غير حدّ لما ملوا وما عبدوا

If creation were tasked with endless worship

Without limit they would not tire nor worship

تغلى من أجلي أجفاني لنار هوى

بالقلبِ من داخل الأحشاء تتقدُ

My eyelids boil for the fire of passion

Ablaze within my heart from my innards

لله قومٌ بتركِ الاقتداء شقوا

وآخرون بترك الاقتدا سعدوا

Some people by abandoning following went astray

While others by abandoning following found bliss

الحقُّ ابلج ما يخفى على أحد

وقد تنازع فيه النسر والأسد

The truth is evident and not hidden from anyone

As the eagle and lion disputed over it

عليه أجمع أهل الأرض كلهمُ

عقلاً وشرعاً فما يرمى به أحد

All people of earth agree on it

In reason and law so none reject it

من أعجب الأمر فيهم ما أفوه به

هم المقرّون بالأمر الذي جحدوا

Most wondrous among them is what they declared

Those bound by the matter they denied

وإنما اختلفت فيه مقاصدهم

فنعمَ ما قصدوا وبئسَ ما وجدوا

Only their intentions regarding it differed

So excellent what they intended and miserable what they found

ألا مام بعين الشرع أدركه

له الإصابة نعمَ الركنُ والسند

Indeed the one with insight of law realized it

For him is success, an excellent pillar and support

هو الكريم فما تحصى مواهبه

من العطايا ومنه الجودُ والرفد

He is Noble so his gifts cannot be counted

Of bounties and from Him generosity and provision

لما توهمَ أن الأمر مغلطةٌ

عقلُ المنازعِ تاه العقلُ فاستندوا

When the disputant’s mind imagined it was a deception

The mind went astray so they took support

إلى الشريعةِ لا تلوي علي نظر

من العيونِ التي أصابها الرمد

In the law do not cast your eyes askance

At the eyes which cataracts have afflicted

لو أنها شفيت مما بها نظرت

بعطى العلوم بسير الكوكبِ الرصد

If they were cured they would see with what they saw

The healer of sciences by observing the planets

وإنَّ ربك بالمرصادِ فازدجروا

يدري بذلك سبَّاقٌ ومقتصد

And your Lord is vigilent so be warned

That precedent and discipline know it

ترنو إليك عيونٌ ما لها بصر

لما تمكن منها الغل والحسد

Eyes without sight yearn for you

When rancour and envy incapacitated them

وذاك حين رأت كشفاً قد اختلفت

عليه عند ذوي ألبابه الجدد

That was when they saw an unveiling they differed over

Among those with sound minds and wisdom

فقال شخص بما الثاني يقلبله

وكلهم ناظر في الله مجتهد

One person said what the other would rebut

Though all look to God with diligence

منوَّع في التجلي حكمه ابدا

ما ثم روحٌ تراه ما له جسد

Diverse in revelation, His rule is eternal

No spirit sees Him that has a body

فلو تجلى إلى الأسراركان له

حكم يخالف هذا ما له أمد

If He revealed Himself to mysteries He would have

A rule different than this without end

وإنما يتجلى في بصائرنا

فيحكم الوهم فيه بالذي يجد

He only reveals Himself in our insights

So perception judges what it finds

وقتاً ينزهه وقتاً يشبهه

وقتا يمثله جسما ويعتقد

At times extolling Him and at times likening Him

At times embodying Him and believing thus

إن الحديثَ على ما قد تخيله

وقد تحكم فيه الغيُّ والرشد

Talking about what one has imagined

And what folly and wisdom have judged

سبحانه وتعالى أن تراه على

ما قد رأى نفسه فإنه الأحد

Glory be to Him that you see Him as

What He has seen Himself for He is The One

والواحد الحقُّ لا غير يشفعه

والغير ما ثم فاستره إذا يرد

The One True with no other mediating for Him

And there is no other so conceal it if you wish

لو كان لي نظر في ما نظرت

عيني إليه به ما ضمني البلد

If I had insight into what my eyes

Looked to by it I would not be guaranteed safety

هو الأمين الذي آلى به قسما

في حق من لم يكن لكونه أمد

He is The Trustworthy Who swore an oath regarding

The right of one who had no being nor endurance

لو انتفى الأزل المعلومُ عنه كما

عنه انتفى إذ نفاه الحال والبلد

If eternity known of Him ceased just as

Of Him ceased when state and endurance denied it
